I'm just wondering how much of the story you will miss if you decide to make a tank yourself and just leave Alistair behind when you get Sten..
Not that much really. He shows up whenever it's important to the plot. All you miss out on is approval opportunities and any interjections he makes while speaking to other characters during quests.

Heh, if the character started as the leader most people who complain about him seem to want, not only would there be no character arc where he grows into leadership and overcomes his fears, but the PC would have nothing to do except follow Alistair. Doesn't sound like a game people would find appealing, playing squire to King Alistair.
That's it pretty much. People are complaining that Alistair let's them play the game the way they want and not interfere... It is odd when you think about it.

He's useful if you need a warrior, but I've never liked him much as a person. Maybe it's because I'm male, his fan all seem to be women...

The only point where I really wanted to give him a dickpunch was when he chucked a spaz after recruiting Loghain. His ideals regarding the Grey Warden's are way too altruistic - they were never supposed to be an order of heroic shining knights and Duncan, his idol, would totally have done the same.
Other than that he's my favourite dude on the team and I enjoy the fact that he has apparent flaws just like anyone else would. It is good to help him overcome them. It's all "aww" and stuff.

Alistair's biggest problem is that he thinks being made a warden is being given an honor, rather than the truth of being chosen to bear a burden.
Some would say that is an honour.
