Alistair is a fun character, though I find that sometimes I just want to say, "If you think you can do better then you lead! Oh wait, you already fobbed decision making off on me, so stfu and make me a sammich!"

I like Alistair. I just don't use him much because my main character is also a weapon+shield using templar. Alistair has pretty much been tending to the fire at camp ever since I recruited Sten, though I brought him along for Return to Ostagar.

Except when I go to Redcliff, Ostegar, or the landsmeet, Alistair remains at camp. Even when a female is romancing him. I prefer girls in my party, and Shale smokes Alistair and Sten as a tank!

As far as romance is concerned, I think Alistair is the only LI that you can kiss while adventuring. I can kiss him anywhere. On the steps of Orzammar or in the Brecilian woods. Sometimes, the other party members chime in as well - Leliana for one. I could image Morrigan sticking a finger in her mouth to throw up!

guess I'll chime in. his whiny-ness and complaints about choices when he gave up leadership get annoying. he does have a few funny lines, but I hate him.

Eh, I use Alistair as my main tank, but he hates my warden. Which is porbably because I choose a combination of arrogant dialog and tend to take shady deals. (I'm thinking of a couple powerful demons, hehe, I really wanted Blood Mage unocked...)

I like Alistair, like someone said before I feel like I'm sharing the adventure with him as a fellow Grey Warden so I use him in my party quite a bit (unless I'm tanking).

He's alright. I'm pretty torn about him, actually. I played it through 5 times, and for most of them I found him a slightly funny (if whiny) useful member to the party. However, then I introduced my friend to the game and watched him play for awhile while we bantered. He really hated Alistair and called him many offensive names (actually funny, but probably not forum appropriate) and pointed out his annoyances. I now see how he can annoy people, and don't know how I missed it before.

Tl;dr- An Alistair is fine too.

I'm just wondering how much of the story you will miss if you decide to make a tank yourself and just leave Alistair behind when you get Sten..

Not that much really. He shows up whenever it's important to the plot. All you miss out on is approval opportunities and any interjections he makes while speaking to other characters during quests.

I was slightly worried Alistair would be too over-the-top from some of the sound bytes released before DA:O went gold. But across multiple playthroughs, I can safely say I like the character. He doesn't fit in the evil parties but is great in my good or neutral parties. Only a few lines of his dialogue kind of irk me. Mostly it's just the writers trying to get a laugh out of the players, but some of his dialogue breaks the atmosphere and feels more like backseat commentary from someone watching you play the game rather than a goofy, semi-ineffectual character in the game world. Luckily it doesn't happen often.

Heh, if the character started as the leader most people who complain about him seem to want, not only would there be no character arc where he grows into leadership and overcomes his fears, but the PC would have nothing to do except follow Alistair. Doesn't sound like a game people would find appealing, playing squire to King Alistair.

That's it pretty much. People are complaining that Alistair let's them play the game the way they want and not interfere... It is odd when you think about it.Image IPB

I always want to smack him when he gets all "HERP DERP BEING A WARDEN IS AN HONOR", particularly at the Landsmeet.

He's useful if you need a warrior, but I've never liked him much as a person. Maybe it's because I'm male, his fan all seem to be women...

Alistair's biggest problem is that he thinks being made a warden is being given an honor, rather than the truth of being chosen to bear a burden.

^^ This.

The only point where I really wanted to give him a dickpunch was when he chucked a spaz after recruiting Loghain. His ideals regarding the Grey Warden's are way too altruistic - they were never supposed to be an order of heroic shining knights and Duncan, his idol, would totally have done the same.

Other than that he's my favourite dude on the team and I enjoy the fact that he has apparent flaws just like anyone else would. It is good to help him overcome them. It's all "aww" and stuff.

Some would say that is an honour.
