I know if you loot the guy you get a plot item. I'm going to the good guy root and don't really want to loot him but does that plot item became important later on in the game? It's some sort of figurine I think.

says that you can return the figurine to Deygan for a sapphire and XP; not really worth the RP hit if that's your goal, IMO. 200 XP won't make or break your game.
His boots, on the other hand, are something you can trade to the Mad Hermit:

You only need one item on that list to get the acorn the hermit has that'll let you go on with the game, and that's also not the only way to move forward. If you want all the items the hermit has to trade (there are three), you will need three of the items on that list.
