After many attempts to try and play/understand NWN 2 i finally stuck with it and completed the OC.  But right from the start, each time you level up you have to choose weapon specilizations.

So in each game (for example the OC) is there only ever the same weapons, or at the start of each new game do you get the special weapons (Astral blade for example, i used that till nearly the end) plus some random statted random weapons?

How is a new person to the game supposed to choose a weapon when you have to select specializations right from the start?:/  I started off with Longsword, but wondered what it'd be like using a Katana halfway through when i picked up an awesome unique one.  Now i've just started the MoTB campaign and i'm wondering what the slings are like, also what it's like to use a bow.  But i have to choose right from the start and i don't know how one does that :(

So how did/do you choose?

You don't have to specialize in any weapon, there are other feats. If you want to be able to use every weapon, take martial proficiency (or a class that give it for free) and exotic.

If you really want to specialize in one weapon, longsword is usually a safe bet, it's the most classic weapon and you can find a decent one in just about any module. Or shortsword if you prefer smaller weapons.

It's true you don't have to specialize, but you get many bonuses if you do. Different weapons don't have different speeds or advantages, do they? In most other games daggers are lower damage but faster, spears are slow but have better reach. As far as i know (with my very limited knowledge :D) in NWN 2 the attacks per turn is the same.

No, there's no weapon speed here, your number of attacks depend on your Base attack bonus. Dual wielding feats add more attacks with the off-hand, if you choose to use one.

The bonuses depend on your class. If you're not a Fighter, the bonuses are not that great, so you don't miss a lot from not specializing.

Personally, I just decide on what I think the character would use - depending on what sort of person they are - a hulking great barbarian might go for something big & heavy like a maul or great axe, while a sneaky rogue might prefer something small like a pair of daggers.

I suppose it all depends on whether you see the game as a system of numbers, or a means to roleplay a character with their own personality and approach to the world.
Back my P&P days, quite often we'd be looking for whatever equipment matched the lead figure we'd painted up to play the character, while in NWN1 it was sometimes a case of basing the character & their equipment on the portrait we'd found. Image IPB
NWN2-wise, although weapon length & speed isn't modeled, there are a couple of differences to be aware of:
Light weapons can be more easily dual wielded
Single handed weapons allow the use of a shield, increasing your armour class
Double handed weapons do quite a bit more damage, especially if your character has high strength

Once you get into the realms of bonuses to damage from the various magic weapons you can pick up, the initial weapon base damage doesn't really matter that much any more - the difference in base damage between a dagger and say a long sword is pretty much minimised when they've got all sorts of magical extras, like d6 fire damage, +2 weapon, etc.
So, specialise in whatever you like, depending on how you want to play the game, although as Arkalezth mentioned above, in some modules available, some weapons are more common than others - you won't find many characters specialised in Scythe, as they'll probably never find any decent ones in the shops. Image IPB  Also, I've not seen that many characters using scimitars, possibly because they look so horrid in game!

A good module will have most if not all weapons represented somewhere. Of course, things like longsword tend to be more common.

In terms of the numbers, you can pick a weapon with good base stats (e.g. greatsword > greataxe) but in modules like the OC, they pale in comparison to the enchantments you can put on the item anyway, so it's not that big a deal.

The whole point of specialising, though, is that you get bonuses but lose a degree of flexibility. Remember too that if you're using a longsword +1 and have Weapon Focus in it, it's still better to switch to that Flaming Greataxe +2 and forgoe the feat bonus since the weapon is so much better. Taking a ranged weapon as well is not uncommon either (though ranged generally are not that great in NWN2) even if you're not specialised in it since you can open combat with a shot or hit people from afar (could for interrupting casters) and then switch to melee later.

As Arkalzeth says, the biggest bonuses come to Fighters. They can get a variety of weapon specialisation feats, giving them decent attack and damage bonuses. Other classes can only get a +1 to attack, nice but not the be-all-and-end-all.

Actually statistics-wise, scimitars are one of the best weapons in NWN2. They have excellent critical threat range, you can wield them two-handed, if you want to, and you can Power Attack with them. Sure the base game models are horrible. But you can always replace them with those marvelous models:

Hi Haplose - that's exactly what I've done in my current project - being desert based, Escriminator's pack is ideal, and they look cracking.
Also, numbers wise, I agree - Scimitars are great.
