With the exception of the box-art , in every trailer and demo the blade comes out of Shepards right hand, where-as the Omni-tool (as shown in the demos) comes from his left hand.
So basically, before everyone jumps to bold conclusions as they just love to do on this forum, think about this for a minute: maybe the blade is a piece of new tech? not a function of the omni-tool we've never seen before.
Just a thought.
i dont think the "omni-blade" is actually the omni-tool

This is the internet sir. Please take your logic and go else where =P
No, it makes sense. Bioware wrote in ammo after ME1 so why not write in new omni-tool based melee weapons after ME2?

I don't really remember people complaining when Kasumi would omni-tool backstab enemies when we got her.

I still say it's a micro-manufactured blade created from a transparent, crystalline composite material derived from omni-gel, which is fed through a tube from a compartment located somewhere else on his armor, to processing units located in his gauntlet. The hologram is basically a display that defines the shape of the blade for the user. When Shepard stabs someone in the gullet with it, the omni-tool directs a high-frequency energy pulse through the blade, effectively shattering it into microscopic fragments.
The blade itself is suspended by a focused magnetic field, which also subtley forces the blade in the direction of the user's attack, increasing the force of impact.
... Okay. Maybe I have it all wrong. But it sounds cool.

I thought she knifed them or something.

We really can't see clearly Kasumi uses her omni-tool to backstab.

I figured that if you make a mass effect field in the shape of a knife, you could make the air inside the field be as dense as a blade made of steel, diamond, titanium or whatever you want. Then you could wrap a hologram over it so you could see where it was, and you get the omni-blade.
This way you could make is as sharp as you want, even down to a single molecule in thickness.

Sure if you ignore the fact that Casey during the G4 demo says it part of the Omitool
