With the exception of the box-art , in every trailer and demo the blade comes out of Shepards right hand, where-as the Omni-tool (as shown in the demos) comes from his left hand.
So basically, before everyone jumps to bold conclusions as they just love to do on this forum, think about this for a minute: maybe the blade is a piece of new tech? not a function of the omni-tool we've never seen before.
Just a thought.
