In ME1 Sovereign lands on Eden Prime and then later takes off.  When Sovereign takes off he leaves a giant crater behind.  In the ME3 footage it appears as if Reapers of all sorts are landing and walking around on planets without having adverse affects on the ground under them.  The only damage they cause is on infrastructure and this damage comes from their weapons.  Which begs the question:  Why did Sovereign leave an enormous crater on Eden Prime while other Reapers can land on planets and not cause giant craters?

One solution I came up with is that Sovereign could have caused the crater when it took off and not when it landed or when it was waiting for Saren.  We have not seen any other Reapers take off after landing.

This question might have already been asked and if so I apologise.  I simply want other's responses to this question.

Could have just been that the capital-class Reaper types can cause "scorched-earth" damage when landing and taking off at max burn. Since they were planning on nuking the colony anyway, it was a moot point.

It could have also simply been a weapons bombardment to clear landing zone...that actually does make sense.

I do believe the damage was caused by the take-off, rather than landing or from just sitting there.

However, I do recall seeing a Reaper destroying a building with one of it's 'tentacles' it was using to walk with (in one of the demos). And one other thing to consider, Sovereign was a dread-naught class size Reaper, there are also cruiser class size ones too (such as the one chasing Shep & co. out of that hole in a different demo), so size may play a role in the amount of damage done too.

I may actually rule out weapon bombardment because Kaidan says, "That must be where the Geth ship landed."  Implying this may have more to do with Sovereign's mass effect core rather than weapons.  Still is a sound theory though.

It doesn't make sense for a reaper to have burners. Mass effect fields are anti-gravity magic. Why would thrusters even be neccesary? I think it a design to create awe re: sovereign, but it's not entirely justified based on what we know re: the reapers.

The smaller or less powerful Reapers may have smaller mass effect cores so this is a possiblity.

I would guess the dreadnought sized Reapers can do that.

Yeah I changed it from mass effect engine to mass effect core because I think it may have more to do with the mass effect field the Reaper generates around itself.

Edit: Nevermind then.
