Anyways, there's recently been some complaint about how ME3 seems to be doing nothing new with the ammo system, still using the thermal clips which sort of alienates the lore, and the system which ME1 had. So, after reading someone's suggestion for a compromise, I decided to elaborate on that. Now before I get started, let me say that this can be a bit complicated. And I realize at this point in development, it's probably too late to change it, but it could perhaps find a place in future Mass Effect games.
So, the original suggestion, was to have Shepard still have to reload, but instead of disposing of the thermal clip and having to find new ammo, to keep the clip and place it in a cooling system of sorts (strictly a lore thing of course, the whole process still being initiated with a single button press) and place a second clip in while the first cools down, which it would then be used again in the next reload.
I took that a step further. I envision it as this: Take for instance, a weapon has 3 thermal clips. (I'm using a low number for simplicity sakes. An assault rifle using this ammo system may benefit more from 5 to 6 clips for example.)
There would be a heat bar similar to the one in ME1. You can fire continuously until it overheats. When it overheats, you could wait until it cools down, which was mandatory in ME1, or you could reload to keep the pace as in ME2. Either method works, but you'd want to think about what the situation best calls for. Reloading would place that clip into a state of cooling. It's heat status would be a color coded symbol below the heat bar. (along with the other clips in storage, or 'reserve ammo' if you will.) In place of that clip would be the coolest clip you have in storage (if you have multiple clips in different states of heat, the game would pick the coolest one, so that way you'd end up with the 'freshest' clip instead of a 'half loaded' one. Unless of course you've gone crazy with your firepower, (or just get yourself in one hell of a battle), in which all of your clips could be overheated, or high on heat (which would be the equivalent of just plain having low ammo in modern shooters).
Cooling of clips in a certain weapon would continue even if you switch to another weapon. Ultimately this could facilitate more frantic, intense battles, as you'd always have a considerably fresh weapon, considering you've intelligently managed your clips and their heat.
In the long run, in my opinion among others', this would add a whole new tactic to Mass Effect. When to reload. This also strikes a nice compromise between ME1 and ME2's ammo systems, while also staying true to the lore that Bioware has established. Since Mass Effect doesn't really use ammo. It uses heat. Thermal clips aren't a bad idea, it just feels as though Thermal clips are being used too much like a modern soldier would use a magazine on a modern gun.
So, thoughts? Suggestions on how to improve this idea? Mostly, I put this here in hopes that Bioware will see it, and at least consider the thought, run it by their designers, the real brains behind the whole operation for final judgement. But, feedback is feedback.
Regardless, this looks like a fun community, and I will at least be lurking. Lately I'm not much of a poster, but last year I was one hell of a forum aficionado. Maybe I can get back my spark. Anyways, good day and good night.
