Sorry that I don't have anything more definitive, but hope this helps.

Is it still possible to save both Vigil's Keep and Amaranthine or does the import act as if everybody at Vigil's Keep is dead if you save Amaranthine (it does that whenever I import a save where I save both Vigil's Keep and Amaranthine).
Vigil's Keep is recognized as destroyed because of a bad flag with DAA, and the developers have made it clear that they have no intention of fixing it for the import to DA2.

Where did they say this?

We cannot directly fix the issue within DA2. We're working on ways to circumvent the problem in the future, however.
Good to know.

By circumventing the problem in the future, are you talking about Dragon Age 3? I'm honestly not certain what you meant by that. And if you're still reading this, is there going to be a fix for Codex entry: A Study of the Fifth Blight, Vol. Two?

You can only fight at one of the two, but if you fully upgrade the vigil and fight at amaranthine, the vigil will be saved and your companions survive. And by fully upgrade, I mean the walls made out of granite, the extra money given in for workers, three sets of metals found for Wade to construct arms and armor for the troops.
Being nit-picky here, but If you do save Amaranthine, The keep holds, but it ultimately gets destroyed. However, if you did get full upgrades, the people you left behind survive.

Now this may not be the best solution, but from my perspective the most pragmatic one: Wouldn't it be possible to 'rewire' the plot flag reading device in DA2 in such a way that if it reads that Vigil's Keep was saved, only it survived, whereas it would think both survived if you went to save Amaranthine.Luke Barrett wrote...

Perhaps not ideal, as it has one solution being the obviously better one, but the logic behind this is that pretty much everyone who played Awakening went the extra mile and fully upgraded the Keep.

Granted everything we read in the epilogues are supposedly just rumors. If I recall if you fully upgrade the "Walls" never fall. It doesn't get destroyed at all. Yes the orcs get through, probably through some doors but are killed. If your companions are all cool with you, then they all come out okay. Depending how you treated them and if you did their quests? Then they may hang out after. Oghren defends the kegs. Things of that nature. But the keep is damaged and not destroyed. It's completely destoryed if you did not upgrade it...
edited to add,
I'm more annoyed at things like if your dalish elf makes the ultimate sacrifice, or any make the sacrifice. I've not really seen a reference to it like ever. Sure you get more quests if you include Awakenings in there. But having Merrill wonder what happened? You'd think they would have heard about it since the Keeper was at the funeral for Andraste's sake.
