I recently formatted my HDD and reinstalled Windows.  Still putting it all back together.  Anyway, I can't seem to reinstall Mass Effect 2.  The actual error message I get is:  Install failed, missing file or disc removed.

Win XP Pro
Core 2 Duo @ 2.66
3.25 Gb RAM (4 Gb)
GeForce 7600gs (512 Mb)

Sound etc is compliant.  Direct X 9c installed.

Anyone else reported something like this?  Any ideas?

Cheers!

The game is about a year and a half old now.  In that time almost anything and everything that could happen to anyone installing it has already happened, and been reported, and is available in the forum archives.  (And I forgot to say that I simply don't recognize anything familiar from the problem description, so I can't help.  I can say that almost every EA game disc lately has been very incompatible with my best (Plextor) DVD burners.  I have to use really old Sony DVD drives on elderly spare PCs, across my LAN, to skip around the Plextor vs. EA conflicts.)

Warm weather is here, and the members are playing outdoors (here in the states, at this hour, most of them are still asleep, actually).  There won't be much in the way of answers to questions from the members until late September, or early October, depending on the weather and the release cycles for electronic games.  You need to use Google or Yahoo with a redirector to check your problem out.  The site's own search was broken when created and has never been fixed.

site:social.forum.com

Put that in with the search criteria.

Thanks, mate.  I'll google it as you suggest.  Here is the pertinent part of the log:

Rar error: error 18 RAR process file failed: Read error.[Wednesday Jun 08 19:11:32 2011] Rar Details:  Unable to find a data file, or disc has been removed.[Wednesday Jun 08 19:11:32 2011] Abort Install Called, rolling back install.

EDIT:  Interestingly, when I google the error, there were a number of people reporting it re DA:O....

You might try seeing if there is an updated firmware for you drives. I have heard that some drives don't like certain games unless they are updated.(DVD drives I mean)

I also assume this is a actual disc version of the game and not a EADM or Steam version.

If you have multiple DVD drives, and have another disk in the other drive, that too can cause this problem.

Really appreciate your feedback! I managed to install the game using an exterior drive, so it's all good :) I know it's an old game now but me still loves it!

Cheers! And thanks again!
