...with some more info, screenshots, forums and even a trailer.

I have to say I am very dissapointed yet not overly surprised.

All what I feared seems to have made it in.

Buttonmashing consoly action style, check. WoW-clone look, check. FPS-style camera, check. Characters constantly moving although standing still, check. Over the top colorful and genetically modified looking monsters, check. Crazy high magic world with flying cities and fighters looking like space marines, check......I could go on but you get the point....

My summary so far: *gaaah*

This looks totally without hope now but I guess there is a theoretical chance still?

The link: http://www.playneverwinter.com/

At least hopefully their forum won't log me out all the time...and it won't ask me three times if I allow that a link be posted that I clearly wanted to post or doing similar....

It gives me the feel of DDO for some reason. Not at all what I was hoping for.

It gives that feel because it seems to be that.

Do the kids really need yet another D&DO / D&D Daggerdale ?

Appearently they do....

One advantage is would have over NWN2 is that NWN1 is actually in decline, now. All the kids have gone in search of just these kinds of flashy graphics. So, if the toolset isn't complete and total suck, and the download requirements to play aren't silly...it could work as a next-generation platform. But that is, of course, assuming rather a lot. :P

How do you intend to use it as a platform?

I am decidedly not a kid, and I find the game interesting enough for what it looks to be. I'm not interested only in possible replacements for NWN (and I can't really imagine a replacement per se), but in other games too. This is an other game, and I'm gonna keep an eye on it.

D&D 4th ed. is what you make of it. Doesn't have to be a con.

I'm taking a wait and see approach..............maybe I should amend that an old and tired approach. They really are not releasing much information on their toolset probably because with NWN and NWN2 they have huge shoes to fill and they know full well that they are associating their game with neverwinter. So no matter what they say or what they release it will only be tidbits until beta testing hiding most of the stuff until they see what the nwn/da communities say. They are using us as a what is expected resource. It may help it may not. So I'll sit on the fence when the foundry comes out then decide wether to use it or not.

The toolset is secondary. How the game is what is the most important I think.

I mean...what would you do with a toolset for a game that you don't really like?

Great. NWN2 is already unplayable without beastly graphics power. This will be even worse.

D&D 4th Ed PnP already sold out to MMORPG players, this game just makes it official. It will be interesting to see how it competes with WOW or DDO. 4th ed IS a con for dedicated RP players that have outgrown Popomatic Trouble.

NWN1 already has everything an RP gamer could want with none of the unwanted distractions. Now BioWare/WOTC/Hasbro cannot be content until they have rammed every last unwanted distraction down our throats whether we like it or not - in an effort to kill off NWN so they can sell us something else. That is their prerogative I guess.

I knew they'd never make a game like NWN, but the problem was, how much of a mess were they going to make of it?

From the looks of it, its just gonna be another big flashy game, and thats a disappointment.

But then again, thats how big companies work. Look at Westwood, DICE, etc.

Still going to watch and see. Though Daggerdale is something to keep in mind. Maybe us old gammers should storm the offices of WoTC to force Hasbro to get with the nitty-gritty of what RPG means so that we can bring Atari back in to finish a product right before releasing it to the masses?

Must be sleeping and dreaming at the keyboard again.

From a gameplay perspective, I really liked what I saw. It looks as though you have much more control over your character and more freedom to move about and interact with the world. Fluidity was and remains a major issue with NWN1 and 2, this new Neverwinter looks to change that.

I also have my fingers crossed that the trailer music wasn't just trailer music and the game really will have an anachronistically modern soundtrack. That would be the kind of unpredictability the D&D franchise desperately needs.

Not all that interested in their take on it. I'm sure it's okay as it's own game, but I don't really like the changes that 4th ed D&D brings anyway. Too much drastic change, particularly the loss of what most of us would recognize as magic, etc. It's just yet another fallout/apocalypse scenario, which isn't very fun for a persistent world, although it's okay for a game. Although I might try it, just to see. Frankly, I like DDO a lot, minus the fact that any NWN1/2 persistent world has more immediate potential for interactive experience. I would love to see DDO Forgotten Realms. That would be pretty cool, but they'd need a whole other team, as the world is different from Eberron.

The magic of 4th edition is pretty much the same as it is in the earlier versions. They just separated powers from utility spells. All your normal CRPG memorized spells are found under your powers (fireball, lighting bolts and what not) and your normal PnP utility spells (arcane locks, speak with dead, scrying) can be found in rituals like they should be.

Like was said above, 4th edition is what you make of it, but requires 1/5th of the amount of time to learn the required rules. How many spells you get as wizard with 18 int at lvl 14 on lvl 7? Consult page 12312 paragraph 7! Whats the base attack bonus of a lvl 7 wizard / 3 bard / 7 monk? In 4th its just lvl divided by 2.

Sure its simple, sure its dumped out but roleplaying exists in your head, not in the rules. Rules just help bring it to life.

I for one am waiting for the new neverwinter (though as you all should know it has nothing more to do with the previous bioware series than the name of the city it revolves around). And I'd really like to see the new 4th edition rules in action. I for one was also disappointed in 3th edition when it first came out, only time will tell.

I guess I might qualify as an older player, at 59. The trailer was flashy but hopefully wasn't their best?
I think we all want more fluid creativity in our ability to mod...but that is not a for sure thing with this new game.

Appears to be a combination of old and new..the back grounds and buildings looking like the architecture of NWN2 but the characters and efx are flashy like WOW. Doesnt necessarily appeal to me.
But as far as RPG is concerned...it's really about the players...not the graphics or the cutesy backdrops. Those things are the frosting on the cake, but the cake is still the role playing, yes?
Most of you have said it one way or another, whether it be D&D 4 or 3 or NWN1/2 or which ever you choose...it comes down to those who interpret the rules and take the feats, skills and abilities and apply some personality and make a character out of it all...hell we could all be playing with stick characters and still have fun!!
D&D was and is a game of imagination, which most of us still use very well even now as we play our different favorite games on line.
It is an interesting development this Neverwinter game..maybe an excuse or a reason to move away from NWN1, at least it may be for some...but I have too much blood sweat and tears into my games, characters and building mods to go too far from home!!

See ya all IG

I'm confused, what does Hasbro have to do with it?  I know they own WotC, but neither of them make the videogames.

Is it true that this is an mmorpg? If so that is ridiculous. I thought neverwinter nights was all about the toolset, (the original concept was even just about players making online worlds)

Is it still staying true to what NWN is suppose to be? As long as the vault never closes, I personally will never have a reason to stop playing NWN. With each new module brings a change to the game, a new story, a new world to explore.
