The Alliance might feel a smaller ship is quicker and more mobile, a necessity against the much larger Reapers.

You saw how the Destiny Ascension got torn up(it survived my games, at least). The Normandy was weaving all around those Reaper attacks and delivered the killing blow.

Makes some sense.

That's dumb and not possible in less then 2 months.

If the problem is that it's too 'heavy', it's Cerberus who screwed up big time. The Alliance probably just came up with a bigger eezo core.

Okay, so in ME2 they say that Normandy SR-2 is too big to fly into atmosphere and that’s
why we need to use shuttle, but in ME3 trailers and walkthrough videos we can
clearly see Normandy 2 flying in planet’s atmosphere without any problems
(first in Earth’s atmosphere!!! and then in the atmosphere of that planet with
the Reaper base). How is this possible?

Is Bioware dumbing down the science and logic of the universe again just to
make the game look more "movie" like? It seems so to me. Don’t get me
wrong, it looks beautiful in the trailers, but it just doesn’t make sense. I
hope they at least explain it in the game by saying that Normandy had some
upgrades of kinetic barriers or something.

The SR-2 was pretty trashed in the end game of ME2.  Since the Allaince apparently takes possesion of it in part three and both Hackett and Anderson believe in the Reaper threat it would make sense they'd modify it so it'd be on par with the original Normandy.

And the size doesn't matter. The Normandy SR-2 is also a stealth frigate. It's the absorption of heat that's the key factor in the stealth system.

The Normandy 2 has problems in high gravity environments if I recall. It sounds like it can still operate on Earth-like planets just fine.

Well that's plausible.

Actually, where is it stated the SR2 could never land? The codex doesn't mention it.

Pretty sure you can ask EDI if you go down to the lower level of this ship where you can look through a window at the shuttle.  Shepard will ask why they need and a shuttle when the old Normandy didn't....yada yada yada.

Briefly flying close to the surface and landing aren't actually the same thing. A ship the size of the Normandy 2 (which, incidentally, still isn't all that big in the grand scheme of things) probably could put down and take off again, given sufficient space and a relatively flat surface. Backwater planets, active volcanoes and wreckage-strewn ruins of destroyed cities generally lack that sort of thing. Docking platforms don't.

Pretty much what I said so I'm going to quote you in hopes people read your post.

The SR-2 might NOT get resized, which is fine, but I imagine the Alliance will find ways to fix the shortcomings of the ship. A bigger eezo core couldn't hurt. Unless you were breathing in those fumes, that is.

Eh, Normandy didn't do much damage to Sovereign until it shields went down and Reaper armor isn't too strong.

And we don't even know what took down Sovereign's shields.

And how does making Normandy SR-2 smaller makes it quicker?

Quicker? The SR-2 is an improvement from the original model, larger eezo core and better engine would allow it greater speeds in both normal and FTL travel.

If you mean the ability to dodge, you saw how the original Normandy got lasered to death whereas the New Normandy managed to avoid damage long enough to escape. I doubt the Reapers care how small a target is.

As someone previously mentioned, if Sovereign can land, then so can the SR2. So it's not a contradiction in 2 or 3. Unless they admit ME1 got it wrong. But ME1 is perfect and has no holes at all right?

The Normandy can land on Earth no problem, as EDI tells you due to the Normandys size it only cannot land on HIGH gravity worlds. How much higher than 1 G the gravity has to be to count as high is of course open to debate, Illium has 1.2 G and the Normandy had no problem docking there. It even makes the whole landing thing a bit of a non-issue since no place in ME2 has a much higher gravity anyway.
The Kodiak is still required since quite a lot of the places you visit have neither enough room for the Normandy nor the 30-100 meters required to land the Mako.

Seeing as we didn't have the Mako, the lack of Mako landing space is sort of a non-issue, no? Unless you mean if they made the SR-2 smaller and thus we still need the Kodiak for certain places.

I wish The Mako came back in ME3. It won't(I'll bet, since they said vehicle stuff is being toned down) but yeah, I can dream.

It's mentioned in ME1. The bigger and more powerful the Eezo core, the more **** it can do.

Mass Relays? Biggest Cores in the galaxy and they can shoot you 250 million light years in a heartbeat.

Reapers have powerful Eezo Cores, allowing it to land.

The SR-1 landed and picked it up, most likely.

Isn't there even an alliance cruiser in the atmosphere that gets destroyed wich causes Shepard fall down in the demo?
The new normandy has twice the size of SR-1 if I remember correct, so the problem would be more to find an open space to land not to enter the atmosphere, what the SR-2 already does on Illium and on some Firewalker missions.

Firewalker, yeah, ^^

Firehawke? You mean Firewalker, right?

Maybe SR-2 just don´t have proper landing gear. It is bigger, so finding parking space is harder. They just use shuttle in remote areas.

Making the SR-2 smaller is ridiculous and pretty much as difficult as building a new ship, if the Alliance would think the SR-2 is a liability they would simply give Shepard a SR-1 type ship. They have at the very least one other ship of its type finished by the time of ME2 with probably more in the making. Also you do not cover for your weaknesses by reducing your strengths.

I only brought the Mako up to make it more obvious the Kodiak or a similar vessle is needed.

The Normandy was actually the first in the class, this is straight from the ME Wiki:

The Normandy is not the only ship of her class that the Alliance has constructed. A Citadel NewsNet broadcast in Mass Effect 2 references a 'Normandy-class' stealth frigate, the SSV Ain Jalut, used by the Alliance to launch a raid upon a batarian colony world.

Don't forget that the Normandy is complete devoid of any sort of landing gear.

And it seems that the standard alliance cruiser is able to fly in the atmosphere. One can be seen in the background, and it uses its mass-drivers against a reaper nearby (which seconds later annihilates the cruiser).
