I did this as the first main quest (after completing DLC) and boy did I get my ass handed to me. Even after doing every "upgrade" quest in the town. The first part was a breeze. After the first rush the zombies only came down the hill two by two, and my party killed them quite easily before the knights could even get a hit on them.

But down the hill they just kept coming. They weren't hard to beat at all individually, but eventually I just ran out of potions and stamina, and they overwhelmed the townsfolk, and then me.

I think there must be a bug at work here which increases the number of spawns for some people. People's experiences seem so different.

My guess as to why you are having issues is because you don't have a healer yet. I always do. Curls of the magi first so I can pick up a healer.

I hit this around level 7/8 with Allister, Leilana, Morrigan, and mage PC (with grease and fireball). I also found the oil and had that setup. First time through I got beat at the village when all the millitia died. The second time through I did the following.

At the windmill:

I stood back and did greasefire just beyond the burning barrels so the undead ran through two fire areas. My party was missile weapon unless 2+ got through. I tried to conserve mana as much as possible and let the knight kick butt. On this I couldn't save one of the dwarves fighters because he just sat in the oil fire.

At the village is where I had the tough fight. I sent Allister in to melee, and focused on healing all of the millitia. I had Morrigan cone of cold to free a bunch. From here I had my party focus one foe at a time making sure I kept healing the millitia. I use grease and cone of cold to limit how many guys were attacking the group at once. This way I was able to complete the village. The key thing I notice was keeping the millita alive to help me.

Pluss before you finish any of these missions go to Den and return to Loathing before it's destory as you got a misison or two extra that can't be finished cause of it being destroy.

Is that "Dereliction of Duty" and "Scraping the Barrel"?

If you leave after finding out the town will be attacked at night, it'll be destroyed by the time you come back.

Those are missions/quest you get in Den for Loathing.  You can return to Loathing at any time if you have not finished one of the main Missions (Dwarves, Mages, Humans, Elves).  My last time through I went and did the Warden Keep, went to Den, return to Loathing to finish up the mini quest jobs and than went to do Elves.  I actualy did part of Oz cause I'm playing a Dwarf nobel right now...got up to where I got to find Og's Nutty ex...than I did redcliff, the Urn and now just finished Oz.  I'm blowing through it now on Normal.  LOL...might be time to move up the diff level...since this is my third time through.

I finally got it done after about the 20th try, I used the strategy where you keep your party on hold at the top of the hill and slowly pull them 2-3 at a time. Thanks for all the tips!

I didn't like the sound of Redcliffe, so I went back to a previous save, and I'm doing the side-quests in Denerim first.

If you dont have wynne yet at least give morrigan the heal spell & hot spell. Keep the guards alive and let them do the DPS. Did it on nightmare with the stuck creep that made the spawns happening forever. Only 1 guard died or something,

'tis too easy morrigan was complaining :(

Did you use the oil in the General Store? It makes the zombies into nice torches.

I found I could win easily with a Shield PC, Alistair, Leliana and Morrigan, I went straight after lothering so we were all level 6/7. Most of the militia are Archers, so to win just keep your party at the front tanking all the zombies.

My advice is to never let your group run on tactics, micromanaging what to do and who to attack seems to help a lot! AE stun if you have Morrigan as often it gets tight. Then concentrate fire on one at a time. Helps a lot if you have heal-spell (which both my mage and Morrigan now have).

I did the battle 2 hours ago on nightmare and lost one npc (the fat one who doesn't seem to have any armor) on the my try. Wasn't happy with that so the second time he got him force-caged immediately, which proved a good cc as the skellies didn't stop hitting him and I could mop up some before he got loose.

I cursed myself for not getting Alistair having taunt - it would have helped soo much. Image IPB That's his next objective as until this battle I think he has been able to hold aggro very well without it. (I'm just lvl 10 though.)

And Zevron proved to be a good companion as his dps doesn't go down the well without stamina. Image IPB

Either wait till you get Wynne for heals or you can run back up the hill and because you're out of the event's range, waves will stop until you run back down again, but some would say that's "exploiting".

How is retreating and regrouping considered exploiting?  That's absurd.  It's sound tactics in my book.  ANYWAY, what I did was just that, when you get overwhelmed at the bonfire in the town square (and you will ) retreat with what remains of your party back up to where the knights are.  The mobs will follow you.  Fight some there and if things get too hairy again, retreat back down the hill..about halfway down there is a bridge leading to a building...I made that area my last stand and won it.  It's not easy but half the fun of bioware games if figuring stuff out that seems impossible.  Trust me, you CAN do it.  Keep trying..

I cast a storm of the century and just watched everything die... don't really care about keeping the NPc's alive, they just get in the way.

basically the key to this battle is CC and protecting the redcliffe troops. It is a ridiculously battle if you do that. If you don't the battle is impossible. By the third wave everyone that isn't your party will be dead. And your party, no matter how amazing it is, simply CANNOT kill people fast enough. By the fourth wave you'll just have too many enemies and by the fifth you'll get crushed.

So strategy is, CC the enemies outnumber troops and attack the enemies that are outnumbered. Mind blast and cone of cold with morrigan is basically how you accomplish this. If you don't have a mage, make sure you have Morrigan with you. Allistair isn't as useful. You won't need to tank really. you'll need to DPS. If this is your first quest, regardless of your class, bring Sten, Lelianna, and Morrigan. Micromanage so that Lelianna is always backstabbing, Sten is helping with CC with pummel strike, and morrigan is using cone of cold and mind blast whenever they are recharged. If you have a DPS rogue, make sure he's always back stabbing.

Heals are also unimportant in this fight, so don't listen to the Wynne arguments. It's all about killing everyone in a wave before the next wave comes. That's the entire strategy. Prolonging fights doesn't help. Go into the fight with 4-8 healing pots, a pure DPS party, and you'll think it's easy even on hard.

Yea it was very stressing ,they kept coming when i wished it'd stop.

I won 1st try on hard, i believed it was essential to keep the militia healed up with my mage. I was so like on the edge of loosing. There were 5 zombies in the mob most of the time, so better not allow more.

Going to Redcliffe first is a trap!!! Alistair is stupid that way. Morrigan's advice was the best advice you'll get at that point go to Denerim first. LOL! Anyway i did what you did on my first playthrough and i know what you mean. What i did was i kited the zombies to the knights above and let them help me kill them. Yeah all of the villagers died but that's just how it is. Just took it as part of the story. heh

This i the main reason I think people are having problems with redcliffe.  On my first play thru I encountered the same problem of getting wiped repeatedly and had to resort to kiting tactics and fighting from the bridge until eventually I beat it.  However on my next play thru (hard this time) I didn't goto redcliffe immediately but did some quests in denerim, prepared the villagers a lil better ( I did not pay off the stupid dwarf) and instead on intiating the battle with Ser Parth I made my stand with Murdock and EASILY took the mobs to Brown town.  Maybe it has something to do with starting the battle with Murdock and some of you are going there to early and starting the battle with Ser Parth?  Just a thought...
