It's so increadbly stupid, EA is being increadbly stubborn headed and Valve is completely in the right on this one. If I buy a game on Steam I want to be able to buy any DLC for it on Steam.

The DLC issue is just a smokescreen. The real issue is that EA wants to be a distributor to rival Valve. Valve got here first by forcing Steam on us via Counter-Strike and Half Life 2, and EA's copying that strategy. Except they didn't account for the already existing steam user base.

That's another headscratcher.  They publish Valve's console releases.

Reminds me of an interview with an indie dev about their experience with big publishers vs Steam.  The big pubs wanted ip rights and everything under the sun even though the studio funded the project themselves.  They look to Steam, who hands them a straightforward, mutually beneficial contract and basically says, "Hey we put out similar games but we like your game, too.  Let's make some money together."

Just wanted to make a quick post here to make my opinion heard.

I do not like Origin. I must admit that I have no first hand experience with it, but the very idea of Origin rubs me the wrong way. I keep hearing bad things about the client such as the need to allow EA to scan your entire computer, the buggy interface during the launch period, and the banned accounts not being able to access the games that they've paid for.

More importantly, the implication on the future of PC gaming that Origin has seems to be grim. If Origin were to succeed, other publishing companies might follow suit, and this seems more harmful than beneficial to consumers. The very concept of exclusivity forces limitations on consumers that are otherwise unnecessary. Thus, I'd abstain from Origin as long as I can in a (possibly vain) attempt in putting a stop to this slippery slope that Origin might inflict on PC gaming.

I do not want anyone to just dismiss this post as something made by a Steam fanboy. I love using Steam, but
it is definitely not perfect. There is always room for
improvement, and improvements can be spurred on by competition. Other digital distribution services existing can thus be beneficial for consumers. But the way EA is approaching Origin is just no good for anyone other than themselves.

You do realize that Valve has already done this, all their games are exclusive to Steam.

Remember, Steam is that exclusive limiting force that you're so scared about.

I was looking forward to getting ME3 on steam, but if I have to use origin at all, I will not be buying ME3.

Yes, that is true. That is why I said that Valve and Steam are not perfect. But look at their games, they are mostly multiplayer games and Steamworks is there to support multiplayer functionality. If you look at Mass Effect 3, there is a multiplayer component, but is that enough to justify the requirement of Origin (if it does in fact require Origin)?

Also, there is a matter of company reputation. Valve has shown countless times that they value their fans, and that they put a lot of effort into their products (hence the infamous "Valve-time"). On the other hand, EA has had a pretty shoddy past. Based on their reputations, it seems wise to be wary of EA's actions, while trusting that Valve's actions to be more beneficial for the consumers in the long run.

I've got a question- if I bought ME2 on Steam, played it through, and then bought ME3 on Origin, would I even be able to port my Shep into ME3?

...and maybe you'll remember how horrible their service was for the first 6 years or so. It was terrible! There was that animated gif of the steam cog pushing up the rear of the user.....and that's how we all felt. Can't load your game without an internet connection because, even if you buy the physical disk, essential files required to play aren't even on it!

The main problem was that all they offered was Valve content so you needed your booklet full of disks AND Steam. They solved that problem by allowing you to do away with your booklet and just use Steam. From 2 locations where you keep your PC games back down to 1.

Now EA wants to put that back up to 2 locations? I don't think so. I don't mind them having their own online library. Go for it. If you want me to use it, however, make it better than the alternative instead of trying to dangle some carrot in front of my face, hoping that I'll bite. I know many people will but, for me, there are plenty of other games to play. I'll be kind of sad to not finish this series but I'd also like to keep all my games in one place.

That being said, I don't really need to buy the CE so, hopefully, the standard edition will be available for me to purchase on the platform of my choosing.

Valve® today announced the 2011 growth data for Steam, a leading platform for PC & Mac games and digital entertainment.

During 2011 the platform grew to offer over 1,800 games to over 40 million accounts. Year-over-year unit sales increased by more than 100% for the seventh straight year, and during the 2011 Holiday Sale Steam's simultaneous user number eclipsed the 5 million player mark.

Meanwhile Steam doubled the amount of content delivered in 2011 vs. 2010, serving over 780 Petabytes of data to gamers around the world. To meet the increasing demand for games and services on the platform, the Steam infrastructure more than doubled its service capacity and a new content delivery architecture was deployed to improve user download rates. Over 14.5 mil copies of Steamworks games were registered during the year, a 67% increase over 2010. Steamworks titles shipped during 2011 include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution , and more. Since the suite of services was released three years ago, Steamworks has shipped in over 400 games.

"Steam and Steamworks continues to evolve to keep up with customer and developer demands for new services and content," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Support for in-game item trading prompted the exchange of over 19 million items. Support for Free to Play (FTP) games, launched in June, has spurred the launch of 18 FTP titles on Steam, with more coming in 2012. Looking forward, we are preparing for the launch of the Big Picture UI mode, which will allow gamers to experience Steam on large displays and in more rooms of the house."

EA: "Nah, we don't want our games on your service."

Echoing what many other posters have written, and I'm only writing this in a pathetic attempt as a consumer to have my small voice herd in some way.

I am a long time Bioware fanboy. I've bought every Bioware release to date. I hold the ME series behind only the Baldur's Gate series in my list of favorite RPGs.

Though I see the reasoning behind a move to force people on Origin- cuts out distribution cut to Valve- I have no intention of splitting off to another client to run games from. All the people I've been playing games with for years are on Steam, I've committed to sticking to Steam. I'm not saying that it is a perfect platform, but they beat everyone to market and weathered the early growing pains and have achieved a market share that EA will not be able to bust up.

In short, as a long time paying customer of EA and Bioware, I would strongly request that this be released on Steam.

Adding my voice to this.

ME3 on Steam, or else I'll just buy it second-hand on PS3. EA lose money. Ha. Ha.

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind if it wasn't on Steam so much if

1) EA released sales of DLC to other digital distro companies. As it stands, EA is a monopoly when it comes to DLC. You may say that Steam is a monopoly because Valve games never get sold anywhere else/have to use Steam DRM, but this isn't quite true. I can buy Portal 2 from Amazon; from Game; from anywhere else physically. Name me one other place, physical or digital, that sells Mass Effect or Dragon Age DLC. That, my friends, is a monopoly (and the worst kind, since EA can name their price).

2) If DLC was actually integrated with Origin. As has already been pointed out, I have to come to the BioWare site, use PayPal to buy points, use those points to buy DLC, then download that DLC. Compare to Steam, where the DLC is automatically downloaded. People may not like Steam, but by God is it easier for the consumer. (btw, I've downloaded all my DLC and burnt them off to disc; why should I have to redownload over 3gb of DLC from here just because my HD crashed?)

Finally, I will say in all seriousness that I refuse to support a monopoly that is so against the consumer. Until the DLC for BioWare games is sold on third-party sites (whether or not it's Steam or Greenmangaming, or whoever), I will tend to buy EA games second-hand, for consoles, or borrow them from friends.

If, however, ME3 is released on Steam, I will buy it, because I want to play it. But more than that, I'll buy it to support Steam, and their pro-consumer stance on DLC. (See also: Shogun 2 DLC. Available from many places, and registerable on Steam).

Why EA can't release ME3 on Steam? Is this so hard to do? At least standard edition. I have 200 games on Steam. I want ME3 on Steam. It MUST be on Steam.

Forget steam if they so wish to go against the general public, but at least make Origin completely optional and sell the game on the disc. You know. Like the olden days. Just the game, no addittional bull**** that is of use to absolutely ****ing noone.

If Origin is in any mandatory to play this game, I won't be playing it.

I'm a Mass Effect fan since launch day for the first game, but it ends here if I'm forced to use Origin.

I bought ME1 as soon as it came out for PC, re-bought it when it came out on Steam, and pre-ordered ME2 on Steam.

If ME3 requires Origin, this will be the last ME title I buy. :( I doubt the few people who are that adamant about it will make a difference, but I'm not going to buy it anyway because *I* don't want Origin.

I already bought BF3 - and it was an okay game - but I regretted it and uninstalled it because of Origin.

I'm certainly not buying Mass Effect 3 if it involves the use of Origin in any way, shape or form, and the only way I'll even consider pre-ordering it is if it's available via Steam.

If it's not on Steam, I'm not getting it. It's pretty much become my mantra for PC gaming, because, let's face it, any game that's worth anything these days gets a Steam release.

Yeah I just deleted 'Origin'  off my PC along with BF3 ... BF3 is to damn buggy and the servers run like poop . One of the main reason I killed origin off my PC is I hate EA these days and the service they provide is scum since they can ban your account for simple reasons like dropping the F bomb. Origin scanning my PC and pointless logins to play a game .
I love M.S I got M.S1 and M.S2 on steam but there is no way in hell I will buy it if I have to use Origin . I will just rent it for 4 dollars and use my crappy ass Xbox instead of spending 60 to use on my high end gaming rig .

If they're not willing to sell this game on my platform of choice, then I'm not willing to buy it. Mass Effect 2 is one of my favourite games ever, I came on looking to pre-order the third and found out that I'm apparently being left out in the cold. Saved me my 60 dollars I guess. This is doubly stupid considering the overlap in business they're getting from TOR anyways. I will probably end up playing TOR, and installing Origin for it. But like hell am I going to keep half a series in one program and the rest in another. This is disrespectful to paying customers.

I just want to say that Origin isn't needed in any way to play TOR. You can download the client from swtor.com and register your key there bypassing Origin entirely.

Now, to the point, just to add my voice; I have ME1, ME2 and DAO in Steam, and as many people, I don't want to have my games spread in more than one digital download service. So I will only buy ME3 when it's released on Steam.

Have EA/BioWare already given a response on this and I've simply missed it, or are they literally leaving us just hanging and unsure as to what we should do? I sold my Xbox copies of ME1 and ME2 so I could have them all on Steam together (and because I decided to use PC for everything other than console exclusives), I'll be extremely disappointed if I'm unable to have the full trilogy together in my Steam library (adding a non-steam game just isn't the same).

Surely they must have organised all this by now, or at least have a good idea as to whether it will be on Steam or not, please just give us an answer. Bad news is better than nothing, because then at least we can make other plans, I would very much like to get some kind of limited/collector edition if possible (or pre-order bonuses), so the sooner I/we know, the better for everyone, including you (EA/BioWare).

I've pre-ordered every BioWare game in recent history as soon as they became available (the more expensive editions as well), and would very much like to continue that trend given that Mass Effect is one of my favourite game franchises of all time, only dethroned by Dragon Age..

If ME3 will only be available on Origin, I will not be buying it. I'm not interested in the CoG clone that ME3 seems to be, but I wanted to finish the triology story-wise. I will now just read the summary once the game is released to finish the story.

Wow, EA is dropping the ball big these days. As a consumer all I can do is speak with my wallet. Just like with BF3 if ME3 is Origins only I will not buy it or any other title they make exclusive to origins. If they want the supercalifragilisticexpicalidocious (SCFLECD)version exclusive, fine but allow the normal content on steam.

After struggling to purchase SW:TOR , then upgrading to DDE for it; I told myself I refuse to hand my money over to a service that keeps you uninformed , is willing to take your money but not offer any support at all, and charge you multiple service charges ( ten $1 withdrawals from my credit card that have yet to be paid back a month later almost) Sadly I was anxiously awaiting Mass Effect 3 , now I have to shed all excitement I had , and come to terms with the fact I will not purchase this game. I know one person choosing not to buy something wont impact your gigantic company or even raise an eyebrow to EA but it will make me feel better for not supporting Origin , when theres Steam that i currently have both ME1 and ME 2 on. I truly hope you recant all claims of bringing it directly to Origin , and release it on Steam as well.
It comes down to the point wouldn't you rather people suggesting to their friends to pick up a copy of Mass effect 3 , people gifting copies of it to their boyfriends , girlfriends , Brothers , and Parents. Rather than people complaining about it , talking others out of buying it? I was still 100% all for buying it until my friend told me today its only going to be on Origin only..

No, it will not. But I've read hundreds of posts like this, many of which were not limited to BSN. Curious to know though is the fact that most people want it on Steam, while only a small percent desires it to be free of any DDS . Basically, this means that EA actually is wrong not with the Origin thing as a whole, but only with the decision of not adapting to Steam's new TOS, and thus not bringing the game on it.
I understand that

Chris Priestly wrote...

but this

is total BS. Somehow Warner Bros managed to deal with Steam's new "set of restrictive terms of service", and has been able to deliver DLCs for Batman Arkham City via Steam, in the form of activation codes for GFWL. Yes, basically you were just buying cd-keys for GFWL via Steam, nothing more. And everybody was and is uberhappy with how it works. Implementing a similar thing for ME3 is an extremely primitive issue. Will it hurt so much if one buys a piece of DLC on Steam, launches the game, opens the overlay and copy-pastes the DLC's activation code? Will that make the experience for user seem much worse?

Who cares if this game isn't on Steam? And, why are people overreacting over Origin? Have fun worrying while I am playing...on PC. Come on folks, lighten up!
