A lot of people, including me, will only buy a game that fits both of the following criteria:
1) No permanent-connection drm.
2) Available on steam.
Do your math.

There is no point in threatening EA. The only hope is that BF3 will sell worse than BF2BC in the same amount of time. If so, ME3 will undoubtfully make an appearance in Steam's shop. If otherwise, then, well, we can only hope.Serpentu wrote...

How many people do you know that had an legit half life 1 copy during their lan/online sessions?
I know of one, and that was me, yet my whole school back then played cs/hl, any lan in the area, there was some kind of hl1 mod played to a great extend, yet no one there owned a legit copy of hl1 (i think i met in those years like 2 people who did)
Steam is so far as im concerned the only efficient way to counter piracy as it is a **** to crack and on the other hand offers features the pirates can't
Origin does none of these and has not the same root in extreme piracy (almost anyone i knew had bf1942, what they tried with bf2142.. well there the franchise died almost the first time.. remember that fiasco ea)

That's nonsense, steamworks games get crack just as easily as anything else.ShadedPhoenix wrote...

But have you seen the cracks? they are quite different to most, and unusually large
Also you have not seen the part about offering more then the pirated version, which is not so in most cases (for example assasins creed)
Pirated copy's offer the better deal, while most comapnys just take your money and dont welcome their paying customers for doing so, steam does

Steam is the one that pulls them as soon as there is DLC they aren't allowed to sell on Steam. (presumably for a cut of the profits...)
EA's DLC policy has been around a lot longer and Steam wrote their new policy supposedly with that in mind and with an effective date that had that in mind.
If your upset about this. You should be speaking to Steam about their policy change and how it's affecting you.

Both Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 are still up on Steam and sell their DLC externally. You may think Valve taking a cut from DLC sales is bad, but in return EA / Bioware get a whole lot more visibility and sales for the DLC rather than the situation now where the DLC is hidden away in some mysterious corner of the Bioware social network. The process to get the DLC right now I think, is to first buy points in denominations that aren't exact leaving you left over points that you can't even buy pants for your orc in warhammer or whatever. Then you have to redeem said points and download the DLC through the Bioware SN (at least I think that's how it works). The DLC isn't even on sale in the Origin client last time I checked. I can only accurately describe this pile of incompetence with words that violate the ToS and thus will get my EA account banned.
Putting the DLC on Steam and other Digital Distributers and allowing it to go on sale every once in a while will increase revenue, but for whatever reason EA doesn't care about this. EA and Valve need to fight then hug it out so that games (and DLC) can be sold on Steam again, because I and many others would rather buy it from there than be price gouged on Origin. The Origin client is redundant, and does nothing that the Steam client doesn't do ten times better. This fragmentation of the market will only hurt PC gaming in the future, but I'm not sure that EA can see past there next quartarly report.
Oh and you're save games should be imported into ME3 no matter where you by it from.

Not true. I've got ME1 on Steam but a physical copy of ME2. Never had a problem importing from ME1 to ME2.

I cannot understand why they make purchasing DLC and downloading it so impossible. There is no Origin manager for DLC so if we ever want to replay the game with the DLC, we have to install the game with Origin and then go on the horrific Bioware site to download the DLC. Then we have to manually install each DLC.EmperorNish wrote...

It seems wise to me that Steam not allow this kind of nonsense on their service because less savvy users might blame them for this incompetence.
I will probably buy mass effect 3 from Origin since I bought the other 2 games from EA. I will buy it from Steam if it is available at the outset, but I don't expect that to happen. I have zero interest in a deluxe edition since I am only interested in the game and things I can use in game.

ORIGIN CLIENT IS GOING TO BE "REQUIRED" TO PLAY MASS EFFECT THREE, EVEN IF YOU BOUGHT FROM STORE.
(it isn't good news obviously)

Probably, but I'll wait for official confirmation before I cancel my pre-ordered CE box set rather than take the word of a Drunk Canadian

wadda ya mean *hiccup* I'm reliable.....
But seriously the notification saying it was REQUIRED for Battlefield 3 came out RIGHT BEFORE LAUNCH of the game...so if you don't hear contrary, then I would seriously consider it when you come close to said date.

Seconded, I have ME1 on Steam and ME2 on Origin. Cross save works fine.
Doesn't mean I like having things build up on Origin.

The save files work regardless of how you acquired the game, it simply reads from a specific directory, all you have to do is put the files there. You don't even need ME1, or probably ME2...only the save files.

You could say that I'm a fanboy. I own copies of a lot of your games: Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 including Tales of the Sword Coast & Throne of Bhaal; Neverwinter Nights including both addons; Neverwinter 2 & all the Icewind Dale titles (OK not exactly your games but still -- they built upon your hard work) including the addons; Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 (I'm actually playing them again at the moment); Jade Empire; Mass Effect 1 & 2 including tons of DLC; Dragon Age 1 & 2 including tons of DLCs. I've been (pre-)ordering your games without even reading a single revue simply because I put that much trust in how you write your stories, the quality of your work and the enjoyment I will get out of it. I've pre-ordered The Old Republic & Mass Effect 3.
I've bought your games back when I was in third semester University when I didn't have a single buck to waste. I've bought your games when I started my own business when I made even less than as a student. I'm buying your games right now when I have more than enough money to buy them.
I WANT to play ME3. I WANT to play DA3 (can't wait!). I WANT to play ToR. However, I've just cancelled my pre-orders. Simply due to Origin. I don't care if the game is available on Steam or not; there are pros and cons. I care about how I'm being treated as a customer and human being though. And Origin's EULA is simply frightening. My computer is NOT your computer! Just because I pay you money doesn't give you the (moral) right to practically do everything you want on MY computer. In particular it doesn't give you the right to spy on my every move I make on MY computer.
So my decision is simple: as long as Origin's there to stay I will not pay you money. I realize it's EA's tool & choice, not Bioware's, but to me as a customer that fact doesn't change a single thing. The result is still the same. As long as I cannot play without such kinds of DRM I will simply pirate what games I can (ME3 & DA3 probably) and not buy the other ones (ToR and DLCs for ME3 & DA3). I have the money, I'm more than willing to spend it, I actually WANT to spend it on Bioware products, but for now, you've lost me as a customer.
Kind regards,
a disgruntled mid-30s with way too much money for computer games
