Hi, I recently started a new BGT playthrough with only BGT, Fixes, NPC Project, IEP, SCS (convenience only), and Tweaks as the only mods.

For the very first time, I decided to have Imoen pickpocket Algernon's Cloak so I could see why everybody makes such a big deal about it.

The silly thing was nothing but a +2 to charisma nymph cloak.

So, one of my mods, or maybe it was the latest BGT, has decheesified it, which I think is a pretty good idea anyway. I've never even tried to get it before, because I always play good, and I think you would have to be evil or chaotic neutral to pickpocket somebody unprovoked, when your character has no legitimate idea that he has anything special. Killing him without provocation is even more evil, imo.

But anyway, my question is, what is the source of this apparently new decheesifying of Algernon and his cloak? Does anybody know?

You checked the item ability menu right? If so post your weidu.log

As Incantatar says, the cheesy bit is the activation. The +2 CHA is pointless, it's the infinite supply of (Dire?) Charm which is the issue. In BGT, the monsters do get a save vs. Wands (which I don't believe they did in the original BG1 engine), but that's generally one of the hardest saves to make.

EDIT: Gah, it's Save vs Breath as PPP correctly points out. :)

I thought Algernon's cloak was a Save vs Breath? Maybe that's just Easytutu.

Okay, I got it to work. What I didn't know was that there is no description on the cloak that indicates a dire charm. You just have to notice that the item button is active after you put it on and try it to see what it does.

I think that was meant to be an easter egg that would be a possible reward for somebody playing an evil or chaotic neutral character who goes around pickpocketing and or killing everything and everybody.

I would never have even known about it without reading the forums. To each their own, I suppose. I use the Shield of Balduran in SoA so I don't have to worry about Beholders and Gaughs.

But going straight to Beregost and getting Algernon's Cloak and using it to win a solo run or a no-reload strikes me as a bit disingenuous. I guess the no-reloaders have to specify whether it's allowed or not, because it is a much different, much easier game with a first level character using something like that.

Anyway, sorry for the bogus post; I just didn't know, since, like I said, I've never even tried to get it or use it before, and I only did it this time out of curiosity.

There is a quest in BG revolving around the cloak. It is believed that the unlimited charges thing was a error. It probably was meant to have either limited charges or like 1/day.

Speaking as a no-reloader, i don't use it. If i would, i'd use it once per day only. It's just a gamebreaking item, like the staff of cheese (magi) in SoA.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that guy in Baldur's Gate City. I suppose that if you want to keep the cloak, you just go get it and don't take it back to him.

Of course, you would still have to notice and try that lit-up item slot before you would know what it really does, since it looks like a not-too-great charisma cloak.

And, by the time you are adventuring in Baldur's Gate City, it wouldn't be quite as overpowering an ability. But still, unlimited casting of a thrid level spell? Surely it was meant, as you say, to be a once a day thing.

It's better than the 3rd level spell, as it works not only on (demi-)humanoids but also on monsters. It's probably even better than the 5th level spell Domination depending on wether saves vs. breath or vs. spells are higher.

Speaking as someone who's using it heavily in a minimal reload challenge - never again. It's just too cheesy. It's very curious. Doesn't work on wolves, but works on bears. The save vs breath means I can usually charm "boss" type characters like Bassilus.

In my run (from now on), I've decided not to use it. It is fun to charm a mage and get him to walk right into his own cloudkill, but that's all fun and no skill or strategy.

This item seems incredibly strong. I would probably use it just to see how it is, but this isn't an anomaly, there are always OP items in the game, at least in Baldur's Gate 2.
