I saw the new gameplay from that website:
Now, before the realists come in for the kill...I know.
I know you in real life you don't punch something if you can shoot it.
I know that in real warefare melee has no real or major place.
But from a RP perspective, I have always envisioned my "canon" Shepard(Kain Shepard), as being CQC specialist.
His class is a vanguard, but my playstyle and attitude with this character has always been to be a True vanguard, charging the frontlines, shooting until he's close enough to go Bruce Lee on everyone in reach.
In ME1 I couldn't do this very well. I could boost his melee damage, and I could melee, but it was...kinda lame.
In ME2 it was much better, with lolCharge, but still the melee was very...static.
But from what I see in that gameplay, now Kain Shepard is a real CQQ specialist. He isn't just elbowing people a lot. He is sequencially beating the total snot out of people, and looking like he actually knows how to fight and not just swing.
The omni-blade....the Lore-lover in me cries out in pain. It makes no sense.
However, it's clear that you(Bio., Ea) want this in.
So I have a begrudgingly accept it's existence.
And though it reminds me of Halo's lame little lazer-sword(lol), it actually looks quite a bit cooler.
In conclusion...thank you. My Shepard now really is the character that I have wanted him to be from the beginning.
I know things are subject to change, and I honestly won't cry if the omni-blade and the like are removed...
But PLEASE leave the new melee in. It fits, it's realistic, looks cool, and is just plain badass.
Bioware, regarding the new melee...THANK YOU

No comments? Not even a "lol melee doesn't belong in a shooting game"?

Nah, it's a joke, I'm glad for the improvements they did. In both Mass Effect games you are fine when you have your enemy at far range... But once they get too close, you are screwed (i.e. the husk rush) because of the lack of a proper close combat system.

It's going to be hard choosing between slapping the crap out of dudes with a pistol or impaling them on a molecular blade.

The pistol whipping was thoroughly enjoyable... can't see myself getting tired of that... I may try an entire playthrough where all I do is slap people around without firing a single shot

I was on the fence about it when i first saw and was trying to justify how and why it made sense.
But the fact you can throw fire with your hands and summon Holo-armor in Mass effect 2 made me come the conclusion that nothing in this series makes sense so why not just enjoy it.

The hexagonal shields spammed by the Geth on Insanity in ME1 didn't make sense either.

The lore lover in you should love the idea of the Omni blade considering what it represents for a technical advancement and what the technology itself is capable of as a result. I mean we already have kinetic shields capable of stopping bullets in the game, having your omnitool solidify a physical force projection is hardly out of the question.

I'll join in on the THANK YOU. The elbow of death was great and all, but I'm ready for something fresh. Do all classes have the omni-blade? I've heard talk of biotic kicks and punches.

I think Omini-blade is soldier specific where other classes use their own CQC methods. At least that's what BW said earlier.

Yup, it looks both cool and fun.

I wonder if all classes will have access to it, though, for the really specific kills. Do you think they're going to animate a different pull-the-goon-over-cover-and-stab-him sequence for each class? Perhaps I'm being pessimistic, but I feel like the class specific CQC attacks are limited to the tap and hold options (tap melee for rapid attacks, hold for a special attack). Or maybe the hold option is the only one that will be class specific. In any event, I eagerly await more news on CQC combat.

Each class has a specific melee attack, executed by holding the melee button down.
Soldier has the omni-blade
I believe it was Engineer? That has some kind of flame attack from the omni-tool.
We don't know the others, but in a gameplay video I saw, I saw a double-fisted forward punch, but I can't quite figure it out, I assume that's another class's heavy melee.
It appears each weapon class has it's own set of melee animations.

I hope you can pistol whip people with Cain.
It would one shot most enemies, that thing's heavy
