So far it seems that ME3's RPG Elements >>>> ME1's RPG Elements

ME1 felt like a game that desperately wanted to be fresh, new and exciting, but could only go so far because it was built on the fundementals of old-school Roleplaying.  Don't get me wrong, I love ME1, but it's true. Bioware wanted to both make a modern Action game and an Epic RPG, but they didn't quite know how to put them together.

So what did they do? The wiped the slate clean. They pretty much went back to square 1 with the sequel, stripping back a lot of the bulkier RPG systems to focus on getting the combat clean and the gameply slick. The result was a game that never lost it's focus and certainly did what it was intended to do (namely, being really damn fun), but still left much to be desired in the eyes of many RPG fans.

With ME3, however, It seems that Bioware has finally figured out exactly how to pull off balancing shooter and RPG. They aren't simply throwing random RPG elements at us torn from their past games and expecting it to work (a la the inventory/upgrade system in ME1). Instead they are putting in RPG elements that make sense in the context of the game, and also serve to deepen our immersion into the world. They are returning to the conceps and Ideas they had when making ME1, expept now, they're smarter, they're leaner, and they're fully primed to deliver the most kickass experience possible.

So yeah, I guess you could say I was impressed by the demo :)

EDIT: Altered the thread title so that people understand that, yes, this is purely subjective and only my opinion based on a small amount of facts,  just like the majority of posts on these forums.

Well you've just opened up a can of worms. Bet this thread will stretch to 50 pages of bickering.

I'm just wondering how the armor sysem will work, if it will be closer to ME or ME2.

I agree was impressed the demo and what we have seen as well. Still wondering what armour customisation will be like and need to play the game to judge all this properly. I hope it’s more important and substantial than it was in ME2 and certainly sounds like it will be that way from what has been said. I'm cautiously optimistic about how ME3 is going to play. So far it looks good and the balance seems to be right IMO.

Can I have your copy seeing as the only way to say what you said with certainty is to have played the full version of the game; and even then that is all in your opinion. People can't even agree on what constitutes RPG elements so I'll need your opinion on what an RPG element is, and how it is superior to past games. So I think the most pressing matter right now is why did you post this because you're using incomplete information to state a subjective opinion and throughout all of this you don't open this up to anything else than pointless bickering.

In short... get your blog post out of ma forums.

Haha, yup, this is only my opinion.

I almost put "FACT:" in front of the thread title, but then I realised the ****storm that would ensue.

I am looking forward to seeing more of the RPG systems as they are fine tuned and finished, but I do agree the little bit I saw on that E3 video looked promising.

Are you sure? We still don't even know the specific mechanics of leveling a character, developing abilities, power evolutions, armor customization, etc.

It's possible, but indeterminate at the moment.

I think we need to see more in order to really tell, but it certainly triumphs over ME2 anyway. I love the new menu UI, it's so beautiful. <3

It certainly looks to be on the right path, and it makes me sad that they weren't able to nail it in all 3 games.

Maybe 20 years from now we'll be playing the Mass Effect Super Enhanced Remake Series Edition.

Probably a wise decision. lol

I asked because you'd be amazed at how often people with a strong opinion on a subject are prone to stating said opinion as though it were written in stone fact.  Particuarly when they feel that they may be in a majority.

It usually ends badly with bickering and trolling.

It seems to set up better, but Mass Effect 1 had far superior amounts of RPG elements.

If you eliminated every post on this forum that have no factual basis and are purely conjecture, you pretty much wouldn't have a forum.

with the exception of armor customization, they actually showed a pretty solid example of the approach they are taking to leveling. Basically, whenever you increase or level up a power, you can customize the effects that that level up will bring.

So, for example, each time you level up combat mastery for the soldier class, you can choose to emphasise things like weapon damage, paragon/renegade points, or any other element of the power.

Mass Effect 1 had: Several powers you could improve in a linear fashion, customizable weapons, customizable armor, and loot.

Mass Effect 3 has: Several powers you can improve in a freeform fashion, customizable weapons, customizable armor, and loot.

What Mass Effect 1 elements am I missing?

Well the forum would have a lot less topics, but that is not such a bad thing. Point is this is E3 where everybody is pumping out as many explosions and buzz words as possable. What you see here on a game that is nine months away from release is hardly concrete. To say with certainty that it has superior RPG elements from about 15 minutes of gameplay most of which is tailored to E3 i.e. action packed action with a side of action is hardly a good gage for how solid a games elements are. Beyond that your post had absolutely no rooms for discussion it was just a statement... that's it. Atleast those posts like "WHERE IS MY RPG????" have the decency to throw some question marks into the mix or have a sarcastic question strewn about in the OP itself; yours had neither.

To make full story for you.

Well for starters it's now freeform to upgrade your powers.

Customizable weapons in ME1 are failure. No audio nor visual changes and I-X mods.

You can't customize your armor at all in ME1. And adding mods to it can hardly be called customization.

Loot. Was never gone in ME2 to begin with.

WTF? What exactly do you consider armor customization then? Changing its color patterns?

Anyways. It's looking strong now, but the game is still 9 months away. That's plenty of time for Bioware to decide something not working or just not worth it, and discard it.
