I'd imagine that the LI would volunteer themselves and shepard would of course simply not allow them so he'd force them away and do it himself

in short something along the lines of this would happen

Or something like this could happen.

Shep: I'd die for you *insert LI name*.

Conrad Verner appears out of nowhere, trying to save the day.

Shep: Well, maybe not today.

Hey if we can have tragic endings, we can have comedic ones for renegades too! LOL

If it happens I hope both can die at once. At least that's how I would want it to be if it was in real life. Either both die or both survive, because in between is always worse for the one that survived, provided there was real love going on.

That'd be interesting, in a 'hey, didn't Dragon Age end the same way?' kind of way. Assuming you get the choice, my femshep'll be staying behind, LI or no. She's lost enough good people already.

I should clarify: I think Bioware would not force an unhappy ending upon us no matter what. It could come about as a consequence of certain decisions, but if it will, then it will also be avoidable by making different decisions. it will also not be primarily affected by the ME1 or ME2 endgame decisions.

Oh sorry if I misinterpreted your post, anyway yeah of course this wouldn't be the only ending scenario and can only be triggered by specific decisions. Also if there is a scenario where you have to choose between Shep and a LI, I would happily create 2 more playthrough just to experience it even if it would be extremely hard for me to let go of Miranda.

It'd be a reflex thing for my Shepard. He wouldn't even think about, he'd just throw himself in front of the bullet so to speak. If I had to choose between saving my LI or saving a bunch of civilians though, that'd be loads tougher since he'd have time to choose. That's what I think would be a bigger punch: either you save the one you love or you save a large amount of civilians. There's only time for one.

Ultimately, my Shepard would save the civilians which would in turn lead him down a darker, more renegade path from then on.

That sounds like the first choice you had to make in Fable 3. A difficult choice yet the civillians and the LI turned out to have trivial roles in the game. I should have let both of them die!

Sociopath! Also, I'm pretty sure you can kill the LI later in the game. From what I read in the wiki...

Goodbye Shepard we had fun there were good and bad times but in comparison to Liara... well really nuff said with Liara. Die Shepard, die like the noble hero you finally are. I stayed faithful so no two LIs for me if there were I'd probably still kill Shep. I guess my philosophy of not asking people to something you yourself are not willing to do would win out. No complains if Conrad materialises and volunteers though. I can live happily in anonimity while he goes down in history for saving the galaxy. Afterall Shep would then spend the rest of their life with Liara... problem solved.

I would save the love interest, unless Shepard was needed.
To be honest though, I'd loathe such a choice in ME3.

I actually let civilians die, and LI rewarded me with cheating, when I was just gone for awhile, furthermore it didnt even surprise me
sometimes I think women just cant be serious about a relationship...

I romanced Kaidan, and if this scene ever happened, I could imagine him being all like: "No! I won't leave you again!". Don't think VS would want a repetition of what happened at the beginning of ME2?
And I agree with some people in this thread who wouldn't want this ending - although I prefer melodrama and tragicness as a rule, it would feel a little wrong in this case. It could be that it looks as if it is going to be a sacrifice/hopeless situation, but then Shep and Kaidan, resigned to die together, find a way.... *dramatic sigh*

Hmm, then don't choose your LI  as a squadmate in the final mission? PROBLEM SOLVED. LOL

I'm pretty living beats death any day even if its living on alone and "true love" is involved.

Now that would be one load of a dilemma if the choices in ME3 had a time limit LOL.

If Shepard will always be needed in the Galaxy, then bye bye LI, but assuming the Galaxy is saved and there's peace forever (assuming), then S/he needs to die, to be hailed as the hero S/he always was and will be, with all the races recognizing his sacrifice in a cheesy way

My Shep would rather die than sacrifice Liara. After 'redemption' its Shepards turn to return the favour.

My Shep would rather die then see Liara perish. However I hope it doesn't come to that. If it does, well, Shep will live on in Liara's child if you know what I mean, eh?

My canon Paragon Shep would never let Ash die. My renegade Shep would let whatever LI he had die. Hell, he cheated on all of them anyway! My femshep would grant Thane the hero's death he wished for.
