Basially, Shepard will save the galaxy... except for humanity.

Nah, there would just be a lot more work to do to make up for the numbers lost. Shepard would have to be very 'busy' in years to come...if you get what I mean. ;)

...If you saw the E3 videos then you would've seen Shepard, on Earth, with Anderson, finding little boys and shooting up husks.

Hope our alien LI's won't have a problem with that, for those of us that have them.

Pretty sure that Earth is not all of the humanity.
It would definitely be a huge hit to humanity.
But count all the colonies, all the people on other planets, Omega, Citadel etc.

Shepard could establish a special breeding program if that happens :P

Perhaps it'll be like Mass Effect 2's suicide mission, the longer you take, the worse Earth and the population of Earth is going to be when you return with the army?

I think the idea is that earth has fallen and humanity had to flee and we are taking back our planet from the reapers.

My Shepard has such a feeling, too. :( The only humans that aren't on Earth, he's forced to kill over and over (Cerberus.) That's why my Shepard has absolutely no desire whatsoever to leave the Earth and flee to "get help." He wants to stay back and fight.

And if Anderson decides to stay, then my Shepard is going to feel even more guilt for abandoning humanity. Granted, we don't know what's the deal with Anderson yet, but if he decided to stay, then it's clear he thinks staying is more important than leaving. He's going to make Shepard look like a coward, and himself like a self-sacrificing hero.

"Everyone's dying." If I were in full control of my Shepard, the crew would've had to shoot me down to bodily haul me away from Earth.

Well considering any that Shep has with Liara would be Asari, that kind of screws the human race don't it ;)

I bet later in the game we see that kid again and he is huskified.

I doubt we can go an entire game without the Reapers having destroyed Earth in the mean time. Humanity isn't extinct by any means but I our homeworld will be screwed for the first time ever unlike similar "survival" games (I'm looking at you Bungie, Halo 3 was supposed to be about the destruction of Earth<_<). Personally I would be furious if Earth survived the Reaper invasion aside from a few pockets of survivors. Who knows, chances are this holds potential like...

70-80% of Earth's population should be gone by the end of the game
Otherwise it would be disappointing. There needs to be a sense of doom & loss

1. Reapers don't need an unpopulated planet, so they won't be there as well
2. Victory in war doesn't hinge on unpopulated planets, so Shepard won't need to go there AS WELL.
3. Since the apex of ME3's finale is taking back Earth, it means that there is SOMETHING there left to take back.

P.S, to a possible argument on my post, no, I don't think Reapers build bases and take foothold on harvested planets. They just gather up their husks and move on, methinks. A few sleeper agents left here and there, only as much.

I doubt Earth will be just full of humans, I mean look at Illium, mostly Asari, but there are other races. And they have stated that there are numerous human colonies scattered around the galaxy, especially in the Terminus system, so big deal if Earth is imploded or "glassed" in the terms of Halo.

People are going to be leaving Earth, or hiding in bunkers thousands of feet in the crust and will fight back against the reapers. So the human race won't be extinct by the time Shep returns.

Vigil told us that the genocide of Protheans took centuries. As the reapers don't simply want to kill all humans, i think it takes some time. "Two million dead on the first day, another 6 million in the first week", tells us the Big Ben Sniper. We have months, if not years before the whole earth is huskified, indoctrinated or made to goo.
But if someone says the scale of this is to small, i ask to think again. A million people die every day, maybe more once the Reapers got going. That is no small scale. It doesn't have to be total annihilation in weeks to be urgent and horrible.

I agree, but ONLY if the same goes for most other races. Only humanity taking massive civilian losses and not the other races would just be plain embarassing.

There's reason to believe the death toll will increase exponentially, as more and more humans are killed then turned into husks or just reaperized, these will also be able to kill humans, meaning while there may be 1 million dead every day now, this amount could rise to 1,5 million, then 2 million since the reaper army (if you want to call it that) will keep rising over time.

And if Reapers are still planning to make human reaper, they can´t just kill everybody as fast as possible.

Tbh, humanity wouldn't be wiped out if we lost earth, but we would very nearly be wiped out. On earth we have 11 billion+ humans while on all other colonies combined we won't get above 100 mln. Just do the math, Terra Nova is earth's biggest colony with 4,4 mln people. 800.000 on Omega. 3 mln on Mars, etc. Would be very little people left though it would be a viable breeding population.

Makes you wonder though as it is speculated that humanity already survived a near extinction event long ago cause all humans have a very simular genetic makeup (regardless of what Mordin says). So this could open up a time cycle, as in this is that near extinction event.

If the reapers keep up a death toll of 2 milion deaths per day (! this is a lot) than it would take 5500 days to wiped out the entire planet. Besides BW told us they want room for sidequests and not punish players for it. So it's probably like every other rpg/game out there with this big threath, the big bad will wait for the hero to return.
