Reapers seem too powerful to take on without some kind of plot twist

Seeing as the recent Q&A revealed that the Alliance fleet was largely wiped out (and pretty quickly, too!), how can even a combined fleet of every non-Reaper ship in the galaxy hope to combat a Reaper fleet at Earth?

Reapers the size of Sovereign seem plentiful, and we know firsthand how much punishment they can take, and dish out (and how maneuverable they are). I just don't see any kind of non-Reaper armada (and given that the other races are likely to have been attacked, too...) could stand a chance.

And since we know there's a "Luke I am Your Father" level spoiler that a reporter who toured Bioware found out (but decided not to report), I'm betting that that reveal/twist is how the Reapers are defeated. Because conventional means are not going to come even close to cutting it.

Yea. And I don't see how we won't see it coming. Its definitely going to involve the protheans/dark energy. Game will still be awesome though.

Yeah, a plot twist is most certainly going to be the only way. It's a little depressing though, when you think about it. I know it's just a game, but it always gets me down when I see Alliance ships destroyed in a couple of shots, or a Reaper getting back up again after being bombarded from orbit.

I'd imagine that the Turians would have the best chance in space warfare against the Reapers because of their reverse-engineered Reaper cannons aka the Thanix Cannon. It's basically using Reaper tech against the Reapers and I'd be damn as hell sure that If there are 1000 Reapers. A combined effort of Alliance, Salarians, Krogans, Asari, Turians, Krogans, Geth, ShadowBroker Minions, and Rachni could decimate the Reapers down to at least 300 left if they all used the most advanced Reaper reverse-engineered tech. Even Collector tech would be strong enough to kill the Reapers.

Mass Effect isn't the first science fiction to pose a seemingly unstoppable super species bent on galactic annihilation against species who were vastly inferior from a technological perspective.

In many of those sci-fi novels, great sacrifices are made to survive or win... be it the loss of trillions of lives, entire star systems or a desperate flight to distant ends of the galaxy where one can hide and hope to have some small segment of your species survive. Other times, deus ex machina occurs... some mysterious unknown species makes it's presence known and while they don't offer complete salvation, they offer some knowledge or advice that helps the victims survive the coming apocalypse (we saw this in ME1 on Illos in the form of Vigil, for example).

I wouldn't be surprised that if by the end of ME3 the death toll will reach the trillions and numerous star systems are either wiped out or simply uninhabitable. Wouldn't be surprised either if an entire species or two were brought to their knees and on the brink of extinction.

I've been expecting that since ME:2 came out. Had we learned actually learned anything useful about the Reapers in ME:2 then we might actually have a strategy in place for dealing with them in ME:3.

I mean its not like there was a race around 50,000 years ago who left Beacons behind...

And its not like our protagonist could understand the language that they used 50,000 years ago...

Oh...Wait a minute...

I suspect one of the ways to defeat the Reapers. Laser weapons will make their appearance in ME3. This probably means an Mass Accelerated Laser Weaponry for starships as well. I know it would take a lot of time to equip an entire fleet with this weaponry, including the problem of cost and mass producing.

How do you Mass Accelerate Light?  Does Light have enough Mass to be lowered?

Hate to rain on your parade, but lasers have been in the ME universe for a while, we just havent seen them in action as yet.

A starship's General ARea Defense Integration Anti-spacecraft Network (GARDIAN) consists of anti-missile and anti-fighter laser turrets on the exterior hull. Because these are under computer control, the gunnery control officer needs to do little beyond turn the system on and designate targets as hostile.

Evidently, my dear ForumPortal!

We'll launch them at the Reapers. They'll never know what hit'em.

lol, that's another thing. If in ME3 we do defeat the reapers thanks to the protheans, why didn't they continue to do something with the cipher our protagonist got in the first game in ME2? Insurmountable odds are great but really?...

You know what the worst thing is?  The chances for them actually mentioning the Prothean Cipher are actually in minus numbers.  Why?  Because they have swept Feros under the rug.  Its not even mentioned in the comic (which is all that PS3 users have to rely on), and there's no way that they'd introduce it in ME:3 when a third of ME:3 players may have no idea what a Prothean Cipher is.

Anyone else hoping for a War of the Worlds-esque twist ending? I mean, the reapers are at least part organic, they could be murdered by bacteria...Or better yet, a Scary Door-esque twist ending. "In the end, it was not guns or bombs that defeated the reapers, but that humblest of all God's creatures, the Tyrannosaurus Rex." hehe

Honestly, I'm not broke up about that.  The Cipher was a pretty gross idea - a necessary handwave in the context of the ME1 story, but definitely something with ramifications that probably oughtn't be explored too deeply.

The only way I see a possible guarantee to wipe out the Reaper threat is to find a strategical way to get the reapers focused in one area and to detonate a nearby Mass Relay in the system. With any luck, the explosion will be too powerful for even the Reapers to defend against, despite it being their own tech.

I could be wrong though, I recall the relay that had that destructive force was slightly different than other relays. That and of course assuming the Reapers have a fail-safe for such a trap.

The weapon that will bring victory against the reapers are hidden deep inside Mars mines. it is of Prothean design, too late to save themselves, they left it for us to use.
