That's simply not true.

She's not useless, she's just slightly less of the indestructible AoE doomsday machine that she used to be. I'd still rather have her along than Anders.

Well, I personally would get it simply for the haste fix- that and been able to join in the rants about the injustice of it all haha. But if you don't use haste/if you're happy the way things are then I suppose you don't need to.
I thought the combat was mostly balanced before the patch so most of these changes seem arbitrary and somewhat annoying. The shifts in enemy hp make most fights a lot easier for pretty much everything besides reaver.
I haven't noticed too much of a change to chain lightning damage and @level 10 merrill still pumps out 1000s of damage via chain lightning CCCs, but party setups focusing on staggers may have a harder time. I'll probably try out the rest of her entropy tree once I get to a higher level- the changes to her hexes etc may make her even more useful to take along.
Anders and bethany/mage-hawke will almost always be better though, simply due to haste.

Yes. The combat is not that bad now. Iseriously reccomd it,as it has fixed most bugs.

The patch didn't actually fix nearly as many bugs as I feel it should have, and it introduced several new ones. Additionally, I have to agree with an above poster that many of the balance changes were absolutely arbitrary and they really removed most if not all of the difficulty from nightmare. At this point it's not so much different from Hard, in my opinion.
At least the combat pre-patch could be considered challenging. You actually had to overcome things, and in truth a variety of tactics were viable for that purpose. Now? The game is something of a cakewalk, and certain character archetypes got inexplicably nerfed. There's pretty much no reason to play a 2H warrior anymore, compared to a S&S. Rather than extensively reworking some of the weaker aspects of certain specializations, they nerfed the mostly-functional classes. I think designers went the wrong way with this patch, personally; the game is still littered with dozens of worthless skill investments, and the skills that did get changed were changed in a seemingly random manner. Duelist has the all-around weak Throw The Gauntlet and the absolutely (literally, you will often hit the defense cap without this talent) useless +20% defense passive. How did they balance this? Doubling the opposing specialization's bonus crit damage %.

Started 1.03 half way through my third playthrough.
First thing I noticed: the Xebenkeck encounter is much easier, although I don't know if that's due to the patch. Either the rage demons have less hit points, or my dlc demon-killing weapons are dramatically effective, or both.
I could be wrong about why the encounter is easier, but I don't think my level of play improved so dramatially from second to third playthrough. First time I fought Xebenkeck I ended up bottlenecking her in the doorway. Even that was a long fight. Second time I just kept Anders out of the way and laid the room to waste.
It'd be great if I suddenly were a strategic genius, but I have my doubts.

heh, just do semi-solo runs.
I've been mucking around setup which allows me to solo as a DW rogue. It's working pretty well but before act2 I think soloing would be a massive pain (I hate kiting).
maybe i'll come up with a new challenge if i come across anything interesting but it didn't seem like anyone did the last challenge i came up with so maybe not <_<

I'm still waiting for the patch for Mac, but is it worth for apply the patch or not? I heard that the combat is easier and Merrill is less effective than before, is it true?

Merril always felt a bit too strong.. she just cant run out of juice.. spellslinging all the time. I welcome that change, as its one of the changes that would actually make things harder... while the rest made it easier (ok not all the rest )

I'd say go ahead and grab it, as it fixes quite a lot. Just don't take Sunder; the new patch borked it.

If you have an Nvidia card using driver 275.33, pass this patch by. It causes the game to lock up. I found that out under self help technical forum, as my game had suddenly started locking up at the most inopportune moments.
I had to uninstall that driver and reinstall 270.61.

I"m running the 275 Nvidia drivers and haven't had any crash issues post patch. That said I don't run the game on the highest graphics settings, I also switched off the enhanced targeting as suggested by someone in the tech help forum (soundingcreepy I think).
Currently the patch is technically optional for PC players but you won't get around it forever if you want to play future DLC/expansions when they're released. They require a particular version of the game and you can bet they will require minimum 1.03 for PC.
