Let's say we all buy this game expecting to finally complete the series, but at the end it turns out that the Reaper War isn't over just yet... that we still need to finish the fight in a next game.

How would you react?

I'd be happy because we're getting another Mass Effect game.

Closure's nice, but I LOVE this series, and I don't know what they're going to do to continue it after the Reaper threat has ended.

Nothing can top them as far as evil baddies are concerned.

Not surprised, and glad. Shepard's awesome but I don't think s/he can call all the Reapers in one game. That'd be awfully cheesy.

I'd welcome it if the game was good and they had nice ideas to continue it. Don't make it another Mass Effect 2 though.

I'd be very happy. As soon as we beat the Reapers, the Mass Effect series is going into the toilet in terms of good villains, since BioWare will either fall into prequels that ultimately deescalate the scale of the conflict and don't advance the universe at all, or they'll be forced to pull some swirly-energy being super-monsters-who-were-actually-behind the-reapers-rawr out of their arses to keep the scale of the conflict. Or worse, the series could suffer from Metroid syndrome, and get a dozen prequels with an epic scaled conflict that is absolutely meaningless in the grand scheme of things due to canon requiring them to be that way.

If I remember correctly, they said this would be the end of Shepard's story. That doesn't mean it will be the last mass effect.

Indeed.  Of course, without the Reapers, there's no place to go in terms of new villains that isn't either ridiculous or deescalating by a large margin, the latter of which killed Dragon Age 2 in terms of plot.

If by that you mean them saying the collectors weren't the only "repurposed" alien race, and that there are other armies of genetically altered creatures...

yeah that would be bad.

It would ****** me off, right now it's like the Indiana Jones films of gaming (in my opinion of course), Please don't make a Crystal Skull mistake.

It would be a shame to refine the gameplay so much and finally perfect it, only to never use it again.

Well we all know that while ME3 will be the last of the shepard trilogy, there will be more mass effect games.

Also i think its inevitable that the Reaper war wont end in ME3.
The fact that its just started and that the Reapers seem to be incredibly powerful tell me that unless bioware use some awful plot device to kill them all quickly, that the war will continue for a while and could lead to some fantastic future games.

We have:
-end of Shepard's story
-battle for Earth
-alerting everyone of the Reapers
-bringing the races and factions together to help and work to defeat the Reapers

I won't assume we'll actually DEFEAT the Reapers, just hopefully save Earth, and discover some very important stuff that would help to defeat the Reapers.

I can imagine a Halo 4-style "second trilogy." Shepard pops out of one of the sleeping pods. Finds a forcefield keeping him breathing air like it did for Joker in ME2. He puts on a helmet and floats off to find the Normandy being blown in half by something big and nasty. Mass Effect 4 logo appears.

You know you want it.

I would be upset.

Throughout the Mass Effect series, I've felt that it has been less of the galaxy against the Reapers and moreso a Shepard against the Reapers narrative. So far, Shepard seems like the only one that has been a consistent roadblock in their path of destruction. For me, it would be almost like taking Star Wars and then making sure that Luke Skywalker is not the one who defeats the Emperor and Darth Vader. Sure, I would be satisfied that the story has concluded, but I'd still be upset that the person they developed as being the most important figure against the antagonist was not the one who actually defeated them.

So long as they opted to keep Shepard the protagonist of "Mass Effect 4", I'd be fine with it. However, since they said they will not do so, I think Mass Effect 3 should involve the end of the Reaper War.

The post-Star Wars canon would disagree

The Empire still held onto quite a lot, even after the events of the films. It was even a huge battle to retake Corosant, and there were plenty of efforts by Empire remnant fleets to return. Even the Emperor returned. This stuff may be 'lame' in a way, but its also confirmed canon. The Star Wars trilogy is the end of Luke Skywalker's epic journey, but even THAT doesn't end after his story in the films. He still had major roles to play, just sharing the stage with other protagonists. The enemy still exists, character development can still proceed, and more and more loreeee can be explored.

Even if Shep does or doesn't die or something in ME3, further games can still involve him being around/mentioned/his legacy continued, etc etc etc - just without the whole 'you are Shepard and making these choices' angle. It's not that hard to envision...

Firstly I would be upset with the story-writing, then I would be happy that there is a sequel.

But seriously it's a trilogy and the conflict against the reapers won't have enough content for another part. If there will be another Mass Effect it shouldn't feature Shepard and the Reapers, it should feature something new. The Milky Way from the Mass Effect Universe is so versatile.
