TBH, I'd be happy with squadmates having a casual outfit and then their armour so you switch between the two. Maybe an alternate armour outfit as you progress so it would be 2 armour selections and then their casual one.

There WERE no casual outfits for team members in ME. The similarities for ME2 were meant to only cover how the combat outfits work. What I'm basically saying is: take ME2's system and use those two outfits only on shore leave, and allow their limited customization, like color. And THEN add an additional casual outfit for the character(s) to wear ON the ship (like in ME1).

When is the second outfit unlocked?

EDIT: And 'm not going into the whole light/medium/heavy armor swapping territory because that definitely won't be handled that way in ME3. The N7 CE suggests as much.

There's not much point in this argument, the system is not finalized.

Also, I am going to gather all of the suggestions and add them to the OP later.

I like the suggestion, Phaedon. If they do go with light/medium/heavy armor, I do hope that they do not restrict them by class; unlockable as you suggest is fine with me. However, having options like a light skirmishing solider or a heavy, tank adept offers some interesting playstyle alternatives (even if they are sub-optimal).

I'll support every armor system which:
a) Allows me to put real armor on every squadmate.
B) Will have some impact on them [not ME2's colour switch].
Phaedon's idea matches here.

Hmm, what do you mean?

3-5 sets of modular armor for all squad members. When I buy an Ariake Visor for Shepard EVERY squad member should get access to a "character unique" version of it. Using Liara as an example, she would be able to wear the Ariake Visor and it would be customized to her character and physiology along with the appropriate stat boost. Same with Shoulder Pads, Chest Pieces, and Greeves for all squad members.

I'd like squadmates to have the option to wear colorable unique versions of the gear that Shepard buys to suit their physiology (to suit Shepards who want their squad to look like a unified fighting force), and two to three full outfits unique to that character, with one of those unique suits being casual wear and the other being unique armor.

I support the idea. Customization helps me feel like they're my squad not just a squad Bioware decided I should have.

I'll leave that to the devs...? I'm suggesting things here, not implementing actual stuff.

The Collector's Edition seems finalized enough to me.

Definitely 2. Easy to implement, leaves artistic vision more-or-less intact, offers some level of customization.

Looks like it's a close one so far, for how much should I keep the poll until we move to the next stage?

Option 2 has the most realistic chance of being implemented

Actually, 3 is hardly more expensive than 2.

i voted for the ME2 system as it works best for the least resources.

I think option 2 is probably the best option. Allows some level of customization while letting the character design remain solid. However there should be at least 3 alt. appearances per squad mate.

But with 2 you are just re coloring armor, whereas with 3 you have make fit every piece to different body types and races.  Krogan armor is a very different shape and size than turian armor

Hmm, I don't see why I should vote something different than 3, it gives the most options but if I don't want them/all of them I don't have to use them?

Nope. Not at all. With 3 you have different APs that break up to different parts, which you can use with parts from different APs (of the same character). The only difference is the ability to change parts.

After all, you should really vote with what you want, and let the designers take what you want as feedback.

I hope for Option 3, but would be happy to get Option 2 (with casual wear)

I like number 2, but I think there should be at least some switchable pieces for each squadmate.

Not like Shepard's system, though. I'd spend way too much time on that instead of the missions, considering that I'm never quite satisfied with my Shep's armor. :P

Option 1
I don't care for playing dress-up for my party members.
