Both pre- and post-learning his namesake, please. Vids would be nice but not required.

Does Carver ever even mention his father? He seems to just despise how he's a normal person and like he's one of 2 non mages in his entire family. Learning his name sake just makes him focus on "Maybe I should be a Templar". Doesn't really show as much insight on if he likes his father more for it. He seems to be more at peace with himself if he becomes a Grey Warden than a Templar though. Like he truly is on his own path. Just my interpretation.

This possibly suggests something:

Anders: You don't like me, Carver?
Carver: I don't like you.
Anders: That's unfortunate. Hating someone just because they're a mage is a shameful thing.
Carver: I don't hate you because you're a mage. I hate you because you won't shut up about it.
Carver: Oppression this, templars that. I'd heard enough long before you.
Anders: Maybe it's time you put some thought into it.

I thought he did (upon returning to Gamlen's house after speaking with the mage in the Family History quest) but I can't remember...

And Bethany did say that Anders reminded her of Father (Malcolm)....

Thanks!

It just seemed that in general he resented the magic in his family. Like he felt out of place or maybe unimportant. Both his siblings were mages. One of which was his twin. Things of that nature. Having to move around cause of them and so on. He really also seemed to hate being overshadowed by the player character all his life. His entire life he's probably been told about Templars and mages. Just doesn't seem to like either of them. It's possible he just joins the Templars cause of his name sake or in anger towards the sibling's success.

As an example, Bethany prefers if the player character is more known than her. In particular when Varric says he's heard much about Hawke but not much about her. Mean while Carver bitterly remarks "Figures...", all of that is why I just didn't really get much insight to his father really. Whether he liked him, hated him or any of that. It could even be possible that he blames his father for a bit of it. We don't really know. He never says that I can remember. The only insight is on the Templar Carver. That it was his father looking forward. That is all we know. Not really anything of approval or resentment of his father overall. Just that he recognizes where his name comes from. Being a non mage friend he was named after.

Malcolm Hawke had two little mage-children (Hawke and Bethany) whom he had to educate, to teach magic etc. Probably he had never managed to spare time for his non-mage son, so Carver always felt neglected and unloved by his father. I think that explains Carver's resentment towards magic, mages and his older sibling.

I doubt it was that severe. More like Carver had/has middle child syndrom. Especially this if your Hawke is male as well.

Carver's heard all his life that mages are unique, special, a gift that should be treasured not beaten into submission like the circle and the chantry likes to do. Being non-mage, I'm sure that'd be akin to hearing that your older sybling is A MAZING at sports, school, and women... and you're just average c student who isnt in any clubs and can't get any girls to see you exsit.

That doesn't mean Malcolm didn't love him, or that he didn't pay attemtion to him.. but being the only "non-special snowflake" in the family meant less praise and more, "It's your responsiblity!". Which, to a 16 year old (he's 18 at the start of DA2, and Malcolm died 3 years previous) is akin to telling them that they're usless and unworthy ;p

So, no he probably didn't have a super stelar relationship with Malcolm, and he probably loaths himself for it because the man's dead. Especially since he seems to loath everything else in life ;p

I <3 Carver. He's the worlds most awesome brother. I have a very hard time playing a non-mage, because Carver's just more fun then Bethany ;p

Oh, I didn't mean to say that Malcolm didn't love Carver, just that he had to raise two little mages which wasn't an easy task and probably took all his spare time.

And I love Carver too, he is one of my favorites along with Anders. I consider myself lucky that I always play as a mage. :)

From one of the dialogues you get after giving him the gift/papers/etc, he sounds a little surprise that his father thought there was something worthwhile to offer in someone who was a warrior instead of a mage. I'm guessing Malcolm probably had words for Bethany and Hawke about how they were special as mages and had little to offer Carver.
