Not all romances are created equal?

Something from the Bioware Pulse Q&A really stuck in my head. It was the first question, which (paraphrased) asked, "Will we be able to continue our romance with a character who doesn't return as a squadmate?" and Casey Hudson (again, paraphrased) replied, "Yes."

But that got me thinking... Continued romances in ME3 will be great for those who previously romanced Garrus, Tali and Liara, because they'll get to see their love-interest all the time. Even those who romanced the Virmire Survivor will finally get a reunion and lots of face-time with their love-interest (because, let's face it, they kind of got the short-end of the stick in ME2) and players who "cheated" in ME2 will have a lot to look forward to in ME3, because Liara, Ash and Kaidan are definitely going to want to have words with Shepard!

Even those of us who didn't have a romance in ME1 or ME2 will probably get a lot of pay-off in ME3, with the possibility of new characters becoming love-interests, and even same-sex options opening up to Shepard.

But what if you romanced a character who isn't going to return full-time? Will it be like Horizon all over again? ("Hey Shepard! Give me a hug, but I have to get back to work.") Will we be able to "visit" our love-interest at some other location, like Liara after the Shadow Broker DLC? Will Shepard and his/her love-interest exchange emails? Have vid-chats? Basically, will there be some sort of content that makes all of the romances "equal," even if your love-interest isn't returning in ME3?

What do you all think will happen? What would you like to see happen? Right now, I think I favour vid-chats if our love-interest isn't readily accessible, but I'll take what I can get!

UPDATE: Christina Norman, a game designer ofr Mass Effect, has this to say on Twitter:
Image IPB

Does this mean equal screen-time for all of the love-interests, at least the ones who were squad mates?

Oh, I'd also like to add that I think vid-chats and emails would work great for those of us who pursued light-romances like Kelly Chambers and Samara. Actual face-time with that love-interest would be awesome (and will probably happen, at least as a cameo) but vid-chats and emails would really help flesh out those relationships!

They haven't confirmed nor denied who the rest of the permanent squadmembers are going to be. I'd just wait. But they were only temporary squadmates or only cameos, I'm sure Bioware will make it justified.

I like to think that one of the remaining slots for companions would be saved for your ME2 romance. Can you imagine the fan rage if some were delegated to cameos? ME2 was one thing, since they were explicitly making sure the characters would be in ME3. But in the last game? These forums would explode.

The only ones I'm concerned about are Jacob and Thane, due to the unpopularity and time span. But I have faith in Bioware, and I'm sure they'll make it work.

Hmmmm, as a Kaidan faithful, I can't quite imagine that at all.

I think they might do something similar with non-squadmate LI's that they did with DA2, and give them a sort of home base where you can go visit them and chat with them there.
I would prefer not to do that as I can just see myself making rounds around the galaxy after every mission to see if they have something new to say when I should be fighting the reapers :P.

I'm certain they wouldn't repeat that mistake so soon. Hopefully they learned some lessons from that...I do quite like your idea of the vid chat though, a pretty elegant solution to the non-perma squaddy problem.

This pretty much. From all the news we've been getting these past days, one thing has been repeated over and over - that your decisions from ME1 & ME2 will greatly impact your ME3 experience. I'd expect that to extend to your squad member choices and even if it doesn't, with BioWare's track record of solid writing I'm sure they will find an elegant solution.

And as an Ashley fan, I know where you're coming from. But the fact remains that the VS is obviously important in the last game, and was specifically delegated to a cameo so they could be in ME3. This is the end, the culmination of the romances, and I'm of the opinion that all romances should be treated equally. I didn't like the VS cameo in ME2, but I guess I understood it. In the final game, they don't have that excuse.

Meh, I'm probably just upset because I know my three favorites (Jacob, Jack and Thane) aren't wildly popular like everyone else. But again, I trust Bioware. I just don't like waiting for confirmation.

I hope the bioware guys see this because some of us didn't like tali or either of the virmire survivors as much as the me2 squad. I wish we could choose our squadmates. I have faith they wont screw us but I hope that they see this.

I think that it would make sense for the LI someone has had to make it into their squad, but I am also wondering what happens if someone (Jack for me) dies in the Suicide mission, will someone take there spot? But that is something for a different threat >v< I am glad that Tali and Garrus made it in though, that's all that matters to me lol I think that the LI would fit as a squadmate, it just doesn't make sense for that not to be the case.

I like the idea of having one of the squadmember slots for the LI, but what happens, when 1. they died in the Suicide Mission as you said or 2. if they are already part of the team ( Liara, VS, Garrus...)?

Choosing your own squad just isn't feasible. Why was there so little squad banter in ME2? Why was there so little squad interaction and conflict? Why was Garrus always Calibrating? Because there was just TOO MANY DAMN characters and combinations to be accounted for. ME3 is gonna be hard enough for bioware now that essentially every squad mate you've ever had could be dead at this point, save Liara and the Virmire survivor. If we all want decent squad interaction and more in depth character development, sacrifices need to be made when it comes to squad mate freedom.

Liara is the canon romance, don't you know? Other characters just don't exist in the eyes of BioWare.

*grumble* My inner Liara hate is showing, sorry.

Well in  ME1 i was really interested in tali but couldnt romance her. I wasnt really found of the romance i had. In ME2 i could romance tali and oh man did i want to redo the game again and each time she win my heart. I start a new game and say to myself ... ok i will try a new romance ... but always end up with tali:wub:.

I would really be for continuing my romance with her in the next ME3

I agree with Flashlegend 100%. Also, if all romances had the same amount of screentime and the same content, why would BioWare create more than 1 romance? Naturally there will be differences, naturally one will appear more than another. These are simply things you'll have to live with since it's an impossible thing to ask BioWare to bring back every romance AND give them a proper amount of dialogue, party banter and what not.

So, do you think every LI character has to be equal? I want a good story, not a balanced romance :S

I think a character's presence should be based on their importance to the story, not just on whether they are an LI.

Take Liara for example - people seem to moan about 'preferential treatment', but in stories some characters are inevitably more important than others. Liara is clearly one of the more important characters - her plot armour, her story arc getting a whole dlc, the comic based on her story between ME1 and ME2. Its not Bioware giving more attention to the fans just for the sake of it, shes just clearly got a more important role in the Mass Effect story than some other characters.

While I would like all the LIs to be back for the sake of their fans, I would only want them back if it makes sense from a story standpoint. Thane, for example, is a much-loved LI on this forum. However, I'd argue that his death (as long as it occurs in-game and not off-screen) would lend an element of tragedy that'd make the romance story with him much more poignant for his fans.

That said, for the sake of the fans I would like to see a good payoff for all the LIs.

I think that if Shepard is in a relationship with a character, he or she is important to the story. This is Shepard's story, so why would the person he/she loves be an instrumental part of that tale?

I'm not saying that all of the former love-interests should come back as permanent squadmates (this is extremely unlikely to happen) but I do think that there should be something that "balances" the romances for all players, but this in the form of emails, chats, visits with your love-interest, or something that indicates that Shepard is fighting for someone that he/she deeply cares about, even if that person can't be by his/her side.

They've already confirmed not all previous LIs will return as perma-squadmates and the video Q&A only further confirmed that. Since we already know Ash/Kaidan, Liara, Garrus & Tali are confirmed as full-squaddies, that means someone from the Thane/Jacob/Miranda/Jack group will not be returning as full-squadie.

I agree sacrifices should be made but if talis already dead for me then all that squad banter they are focusing on with her goes out the window same with garrus so why focus so much on them? I think they should treat all characters equally especially LI because I dont think anyone should feel cheated based on if they romanced a me1 squaddie or a me2 squaddie.

with all that been said i think jacob is one of them not returning as a squadmate. i liked him but doesn't suprise he was one of the least favorite. and in my game jack is dead.
