The two main reasons are:
1) the repeated mention of a much smaller team, like ME1 and
2)Wanting to make this a good starting point for new players, therefore adding new squadmates.
I know its tough for BW because you can't please everyone, but the lack of ME2 characters announced so far I'm sure has plenty of fans concern.
Personally, I have a PS3, so I never got to play much ME1, besides over a friends house on Xbox. So, I have no connection at all to those squadmates, and I didn't like Tali at all, so I'm really just left with Garrus (thankfully my favorite character) out of everyone announced so far.
It makes sense not to show their cards this early, especially because ppl don't want spoilers, and that's also a great way to keep the hype train going- but does anyone else feel worried there won't be more of our favorite ME2 characters? (I'm mainly talking Miranda here, but I also really like Thane, Zaeed and Kasumi (but I doubt DLCs will have much of a presence)).

I think most people that played ME2 without playing ME1 have become accustomed to game long plot derailment.

Okay since you added another post since the empty one I first saw, I'll respond for real. I'm not sure where this "lack" of announcements you feel regarding ME2 characters is coming from; Casey Hudson has confirmed that the whole crew of ME2 will be in ME3, even the DLC characters Zaeed and Kasumi. Is there something more specific about their presence that concerns you?
yeah I think it's about if they are permanent squadmembers, or just temporary ones ( like Mordin)

Also, phrase "great entry point to series" doesn't have much to do with topic, it's just matter of taste - some people prefer ME1 over ME2 anyways.Probably meant that ME3 will be so compelling, that you will want to play previous episodes just to check out lore.

that too. Another way to promote the idea with "decisions comic", PS3-style. Not saying it's a bad one.marshalleck wrote...
Frankly that "great entry point to series" talking point is basically just a bit of marketing BS anyways. Casey can't really come out and say "yeah, don't bother with ME3 if you haven't bought and played the first two games because you won't understand a damn thing."

They still haven't announced every full squadmate, though, so they may still reveal one more ME2 squadmate. At this point in time, though, we already have 2 squad positions that may not be filled at all. Adding another ME2 squaddie will make that 3 positions.

Seriously though, some of our favorites will only have cameo roles or brief appearances. However, I do hope that the LI's are squadmates. After what happened on Horizon... *shudders*

2. Confirmed features so far don't indicate that many new squad members. They don't need new characters for new players, just good reintroductions for Garrus/Liara/Ash/Kaiden/Tali/etc.

As far as squad size, I'd love to see it reduced. I only played with 2 squad mates (aside from loyalty missions) Grunt and Legion. I didn't even like the way Legion played, but he was the next best thing after he was loyal. That doesn't mean I don't want more NPC to have conversations with. I think people feel that lack of playable characters means less relationships to build. I can understand that view seeing as both ME1/2 played that way.

Just according to my theory, lol.
As for the rest of the characters, I'd wager nearly all, to all of them will appear as temporary squadmates at various points, perhaps not characters like Mordin though.
Everyone will get their time to shine, but I really don't want..um.. 16 or so squadmates anyway.
(Ashley/Kaiden, Liara, Garrus, Wrex, Tali, Grunt, Jack, Jacob, Kasumi, Legion, Miranda, Mordin, Samara/Morinth, Thane, Zaeed, Vega)
Cut that down by half, and we're cool.
(Possibility: Ashley/Kaiden, Liara, Garrus, Tali, Vega, Krogan character, female character, ?)
(Interesting Possibility: Zaeed and Kasumi join as full-timers, with fleshed out characters, since we don't HAVE TO deal with them being around in ME2, and that could be written around like Garrus was in ME2 if he never joined in ME1)
(Characters almost certainly not to join: Samara/Morinth, Mordin, Thane, Jacob)

I rarely agree on things that I read if it has no basis but with this, it's a good point.
The problem with the squad choices are really similar to real life choices. What I mean is that for many who experienced the game beginning with ME 1, there was a connection with the characters. We watched them grow so to speak. On Virmire, a choice that even to this day no matter what I choose still has me feeling loss and this is a damn game. If the characters had been like Jenkins with no real interaction then the blow of losing a character would have been lessoned.
ME 2 was the same way. We had new characters that once you got to know them then you understood them. No pity, just understanding. That was a reason many kept them alive during the Suicide mission. Bioware is known for throwing a curve when people look at things from a straight line. This is the most Jediesque lesson that many people are not seeing. Attachment. As much as I want my entire squad of everyone that ever accompanied me on a mission, everyone that had some use when my shields failed and I was near death on Insanity, (lol) we have to learn how to let them go. The loyalty missions helped resolve characters but many of us, as sad as it may sound, started caring for our team and Bioware did a superb job with that.
Hell, I want Tali, Miranda, Jack, Garrus, Ashley, Grunt and Wrex, Kasumi, Zaeed, Thane, Mordin, Liara, Samara, Legion, even Jacob because that human side of me can't let go of people who fought beside me as friends not just soilders. But I can't hold on to them. I would have loved to see the game delayed until next summer (as much as it pains me to type that) if there was a slight chance of keeping my squad how it was. I would not have complained if keeping the squad the way it was meant putting the game on 3 discs. But that wouldn't let the characters evolve and grow.
I look at James Vega as a Star Trek character picked to go planetside with the main team knowing that his chance for survival would be slim. But hell, he may be useful. Without sounding whiny, I do want my team full again with the options that I had with ME 2 but someone will die it's inevitable unless we can make some damn great choices.
You have to ask yourself also, would you rather know Miranda is safe somewhere across the galaxy holding a group of soilders together or would you rather have her in your squad only to die in your arms? Hard as hell choices but this is epic war. Damn good thread.

Well said. It's good enough to know that Bioware isn't afraid to being SOME characters back that can die (the VS dealio, Garrus, Tali), and that its confirmed that everyone, even Zaeed and Kasumi can play a role in things. The only thing to make me truly happy about this would be knowing that everyone (that's alive) can at least be around for minimum one main mission as a temp squadmate. I'd love that
