If
you start an ME 2 game, you're pretty much in a crapsack world, on a
galactic scale.  None of the optional sidequests were done, and all of
the major plot decisions were done renegade-style.  The aliens hate
humanity, lots of people (including Wrex) are dead, and that punk,
Udina, is on the human-dominated Citadel council.

All the major things can be done easily with the Genesis comic.

That's not available to 360 without DLC.

Just the same as it was for the PS3, your point being?
We know they are putting something similar (though hopefully a whole lot better) in ME3 from the start for all 3 platforms, so this allows them to say the marketting line because even if you didn't buy the previous 2 games, you can go through all the major decisions of them in whatever 'save editor' thing it is that they include without having to play the countless hours through the previous games.

Will it be better than playing those previous games, HELL NO! but it still allows new players that choice.

"A great place to start" is sensible marketing. "Best place to start" is silly.

I agree with the OP and Shotgun Julia I think it was a very bad marketing line to use, and did make me think that maybe there's plans for an ME4(without Shepard) he did keep saying that this is the START of the glalctic war, and only playing ME3 will answer the question "does the war end?"

I think he answered the question better when asked about saves carrying over from ME1+2 where he said that you would have all your decisions carried over but if your a new player that wouldnt matter (I'm paraphrasing!)

also any series can be argued that starting at the begining is the best place to start esp for a immersive rpg series like this but I would think that BW would not want to alienate new gamers from the world of ME!

ME1 seems so far removed from ME2 and ME3 that were I to initiate a newbie into the series I would suggest they start with ME2.

I just love how threads like this make people come out and air their opinions as if they are cast iron fact.

"ME2 is just a better game"

"ME2 is the best place to start the series not ME1 or ME3."

When really it all entirely depends on perspective and has absolutely nothing to do with fact at all.

In my opinion Mass Effect 1 has the better companions (deeper interation, better personalities), and the better storyline. Unfortunately the gameplay, AI, and combat mechanics are weak especially when you compare them to ME2 and now ME3.
Mass Effect 2 while having shallow boring vapid and sometimes annoying companions; while having a rather tangential somewhat periferally related storyline (in places how it relates to the over arcing ME plot is very tenously linked in) definately has the better and more addictive gameplay. AI is better, better combat, better UI etc.

That;s my opinion. And is in no way considered by me or anyone to be "fact".

Moving on...

Casey said what he said clearly to mean that if you havent played ME before then you needn't worry, you will still be able to play it and get into it without playing the prior games. Its a statement that is meant to be reassuring to potiential new fans.
What exactly is wrong with that?

Honestly.

Nothing is wrong, there is people in this world who likes to complain about everyting, why isn't this the way I want it.

Yeah, it's sad way to live life. Allways looking negative side in everyting. Judging others, but never look mirror.

It's not marketing, it's true. Commander Shepard's previous endeavors to foil the Reapers were utterly pointless. They could have very well just made a game where Commander Shepard goes to become the first Human Spectre and the Reapers come through the Citadel relay. What's the difference?

Less character building, less connection to the characters that were built over the course of two games, you don't know WTF is going on. It's not the destination, it's the journey. Well, it's both, but I like the journey.

"ME3 is the best place to start"

Marketing or not, it's just a straight up lie. One could argue that its a great place to start but definitely not the best for obvious reason such as connection to the universe, character connection, and just basic comprehension of what's going on in the universe. Could this all work out well for someone who's only played ME3? Of course. But the experience is enhanced by playing the first two games(or at least the first game, DLC in the 2nd game and a few other key levels in the 2nd game)
