I've often argued that RPGs are not games. In games, the players compete, either against each other or against the game. The player takes action within the game. In video games, the player is represented within the game by an avatar.
But in RPGs, that's not true. In RPGs, the character isn't represented within the game world at all. The character is a wholly independent entity, with his own opinions and beliefs and goals. And skills.
This is why player aiming doesn't make any sense. The player doesn't exist, and thus the players skills can't affect the game world.
According to your argument here, NO video or computer game RPG is an RPG. Every RPG game takes place within the confines of the game. Even the most stat based, free roaming games are still games. The player is still inputting data and controls that are then translated to the player's character. The created character is limited by the confines of the game system. In Mass Effect, part of that system is shooter gameplay. The character does not exist until YOU create it. You can pretend your character has his/her own beliefs, skills...thats the point of RPG games. But the character is still derived from YOUR choices, your button mashing, and the specific systems of the game. Thus, NO character in a video game is an independent entity.
