Before we get started…

Welcome then, to the NEW and IMPROVED guide to being a S&S Mage Hunter in Dragon Age 2. Now that I have finished the game totally with this build (And picked up my Platinum trophy in the process!), I have streamlined this guide down. First, I’d like to say that this build reflects my love for RTS’s; I wanted to create a build with options for any circumstance that could arise. This is not a high risk, high reward build – rather it is a consistent build that lets you adapt on the fly to what the game throws out at you. Survivability, so kiting is kept to a minimum, Aggro management to keep your party alive, debuffs for dealing with pesky Elites, consistent damage with the availability of burst damage when necessary and wrap that all up with utilization of CCCs. But before I begin, I will give credit where credit is due; the following are a couple of guides I used during my playthrough, I will mention them here first, and then when they are relevant later.

*Money Guide* - Suicidalbaby
*Anders Guide* - Waltzingbear
*Dragon Age 2 Tactics: How do they work?* – Suicidalbaby (This guide is purely a recommendation as I will be providing tactics for you. It is still a great reference and you should check it out. It will help you with tweaking tactics if they are not working in your favor)

So… You want to be a Templar, Champion?

Being a Mage Hunter is not for everyone; this is a path for a Warrior who strives for versatility over raw power. Do you want to be able to stand in the thick of a horde of enemies and not fear death? Do you want to have the ability to stand toe-to-toe with the strongest of enemies without flinching? Do you want to make enemy magic negligible? Do you wish the be the anchor of your party? If you answered yes to these questions, than this path is for you!

*Sword and Shield*

-Shield Bash: Your bread and butter technique; just when your enemy thinks he has the upper hand, deliver a nice beating with your shield and let him and his friends know that the board on your left arm isn’t just for show. Help out your companions too by STAGGERING anyone fool hearty enough to stand in front of you for a nifty Cross class Combo (with Pummel).

-Assault: Need a little extra *umph* to your arsenal? Assault adds a nice little one-two slash and bash combo to your repertoire. If your Rogue buddies DISORIENT the fool dumb enough to attack you, unleash an Assault IN HIS FACE for (with Battery) for Cross Clash Combo damage!

*Warmonger*

-Taunt: Hey, you’re supposed to be fighting me! When your buddies decide they want to pick a fight out of their league, remind your opponent who they REALLY need to worry about.

-Pommel Strike: Wait, you think you’re going to do what? Whenever an opponent needs an extra reminder that they aren’t allowed to: Attack your companions, cast a spell, try to teleport or, try to stealth. And, for a little extra touch, Pommel Blow STAGGERs your target to let your companions help out in your opponent’s “re-education” initiating a Cross Clash Combo!

-Bravery: For those of you who like the thick of the battle! What’s better than being “Inspired” by the sheer number of foes around you? Bravery increases your attack and chance to cause a critical hit, simply by being around MORE enemies! And for an even bigger punch, invest in Bravura!

*Battlemaster*

-Bolster: Tired? Not anymore. Bolster up you stamina and keep fighting Champion!

-Deep Reserves: A little extra bonus to those Warriors taxed by strenuous fighting. Grab Deep Reserves to increase how fast you recover.

-Second Wind: Also known as: “Fighter’s High”. Have a cost free Stamina Draught every minute, or every 45 seconds if you prefer by training Deep Breath.

*Templar* (Who doesn’t want to do more damage to Spellcasters and Fade Creatures?)

-Holy Smite: When you just can’t Taunt fast enough.

-Cleanse: Pesky, pesky Elites and Bosses with their dastardly abilities! No longer worry by cleansing the area of their annoyance. If magic spells, Lieutenant buffs, or stealth fields are in play, use Cleanse today! For preemptive strikes against the pesky opponents, train Lasting Cleanse!

-Righteous Strike: A chance to Silence your opponents with each swing? Yes please!

-Silence: NONE SHALL ACT! Prevent Elites and Bosses from speaking… Err… I mean using their abilities. Don’t just beat down on your foe, gimp him as well! And make sure that he stays quiet until he’s dead with Lingering Silence!

-Annulment: The “Spells Don’t Hurt Me No More” passive. Half damage from ANY incoming spell. Priceless.

*Berserker* (When you need something to die… quicker…)

-Berserk: Use this well, when something needs to die pretty quickly. A good example is a Rogue; use Berserk on a Rogue, I would if I were you. Mages too, use it on Mages, watch you’ll love it. And Lieuten.. You know what, use Berserk on every Elite and make it pay for being “better” than his friends. Make sure to train Endless Berserk and Savage Berserk, hitting harder and not being as tired with each blow are definitely good things to invest in.

-Adrenaline: Oh boosting up your damage potential, how I love thee. Want to hit something really, Really, REALLY hard? Then Adrenaline is your new best friend. You see that little DISORIENT circle over your opponents head? Boost up with Adrenaline a couple times and then hit it with an Assault and watch it hurt. Works well when the target is Branded or Hexed too. Bring some extra pain with Adrenaline Rush and Adrenaline Rage to let you charge up even FASTER and STRONGER!

-Barrage: Well, if you ever feel you’re moving too slow…

-Death Blow: I like to keep Berserk going all the time too! The bigger they are, the more stamina you get for making them FACE THE GROUND!

How to train your Mage Hunter and friends

Modified from the *Anders Guide* by Waltzingbear. My customized tactics can be found in the “Tactics” section below. Ability-wise, I swapped Elemental Weapons for Rock Armor. After you get all the abilities mentioned in the guide, I’d recommend going for a passive that gives +10% mana regen, Galvanism for instance.

*Isabela*
This build somewhat works; I feel the most effective way to use Isabela is to control her yourself. I did not want to do this. I only used Isabela during her own quests and to gain friendship/rivalry points so she would return at the end of Act 2 (And let me craft an Elixir of Heroism. Yum!). Note that this build is meant for two rogues to be in the party.

Tactics (You are only as strong as the sum of your parts)

A couple of notes: These tactics are built around the heavy use of CCC’s. I have all tactics saved as they are during each tactic limit, so if anyone needs me to post tactics during a certain level period (7, 10, 13, 15), feel free to ask. I could not add tactics progressions due to the limit of the length of the post.

Important Item Purchases

A little note: I buy ALL companion armor upgrades, ALL recipes and ALL Backpacks in EVERY chapter, so I will not list them. For future guides I do, I will keep exactly track of what I buy and where I bought it for every item; I only did it for Act 1. Buy Maker’s Sighs potions at the level mentioned; if there is no level mentioned, Maker’s Sigh immediately when you companion joins you.  Also, I recommend you take a look at Suicidalbaby’s: *Money Guide* as it will allow you to buy basically whatever you want; I purchased EVERYTHING mentioned in this guide. And keeping a Magistar’s Lifestone on one of your party members gives you some pretty nice drops for both money and equipping.

*Act 1*
Tome of Technique (Hightown Hubert’s Fine Goods)
Greater Elixir of the Mortal Vassal (The Black Emporium)

*Act 2*
Tome of Technique (Sundermount Master Ilen’s Wares)
Greater Elixir of the Mortal Vessel (The Black Emporium)
Greater Tome of the Mortal Vessel (Lowtown Trinkets Emporium)
Elixir of Physical Technique (The Black Emporium)
Etched Ring of the Twins – MUST buy in Act 2(Sundermount Nexus Golem’s Wares)

*Act 3*
Arcane Tome of the Mortal Vessel (Korval’s Blades)
Blade of a Thousand Battles (The Black Emporium)
Dull Brass Amulet (The Black Emporium)
Belt of Woven Elf Hair (Nexus Golem’s Wares)
Lyrium Etched Rune – Not Purchased (from quest: Haunted)

End Game Stats and Equipment

I made it through the game on Nightmare without a single companion falling in battle (I received my Unstoppable Achievement on this run). Act 3 is especially easy, because at this point, with the gear I was able to purchase, I basically “Stun Locked” every enemy in the game, including bosses. I really need to find out a way to record on the PS3 other than an over-the-shoulder camera; I really want to demonstrate how I “Stun Locked” Hybris, Osino, Meredith and any other person that though they could stand toe-to-toe with me; Immunities to Stun, Critcal Hits, Flanking and Knockbacks made it impossible for enemies to break “Stun Locks” as well.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a versatile Sword and Shield build, I hope this guide helped you out. You’re going to get the DPS or High Risk , High Reward that you’ll have with Two-Hand Berserker/Reaver (if you want to a pure DPS build, I recommend Arelex’s *Berserker Vanguard – Mach-5 Massacre Guide*), but you should be able to deal with any situation that arises soundly. I will not be posting any strategies as part of the initial guide, but I will post them in requested, as well as tactics for earlier levels.

Feel free to post any questions, comments or concerns and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Also, post your feedback! I would really like to see what you have to say so that I can improve future guides!

Good guide with some interesting ideas. I quit the Vanguard SnS I had going when the new patch came out. Reading this makes me want to try this type of build out when I finish my current run.

Thanks - and I look forward to your Act 2 updates. I hate the Arishok duel with warrior.

*Updates*
Modification to Hawke, Merrill and Anders to adapt to 1.03:

Changes to Hawke:
-Since 1.03, Aftershock now procs STAGGER 30% of the time, instead of 40%.Because of this, Tremor and Aftershock will be removed from the build. They will be replaced with Pommel Blow (Warmonger) and Silence (Templar). This change will be reflected in an update later.
-Shield Defense will be replaced with Barrage (Berserker). My only reason for having Shield Defense was to get Perception and Safeguard, but Dull Brass Amulet gives the wearer immunity to flanking and Helm of a Thousand Battles (Or if you have the money, you can go and purchase the Ring of No Wishes) gives the wearer immunity to critical hits.

Changes to Merrill:
-Removed Spirit Bolt and replace with Elemental Weapons (Arcane). Tactics reflect this change, as well as the mention of using a Maker's Sigh Potion

Changes to Anders:
-Removed Elemental Weapons from the "Efficient Anders" build.
-Added Rock Armor to the "Effecient Anders" build.
-Created a set of custom tactics for Anders. These tactics were modified off the "Efficient Anders" build; they reflect prioritized healing for Hawke and sustain shut-offs.

Thank you. I'm still tweaking the build a little since I started it out before 1.03, but I will go back and edit all the changes through each of the Abilities and Tactics trees. If anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free to ask.

--Arishok Duel—
I know some of you will have questions on my strategy used for the Arishok duel so I’ll post how I beat it. First, carry a couple potions for safe keeping, the Arishok will occasionally hit, or knockdown lock you; so between 5 and 8 potions will suffice just in case of emergency.

1. Deactivate Bravery and active Berserk for this entire fight.
2. Basically, you only should only be doing hit and run Shield Dashes and utilizing Adrenaline, Shield Bash and Assault.
3. The Arishok has two Health Potions.
4. With the basics out of the way, here is the strategy:
5. You need about 10+ of distance between yourself and the Arishok to utilize a safe Shield Dash, to do this, run around one of the two pillars to create distance between yourself and the Arishok.
6. Shield Dash in and run away; if the Arishok uses and attack, time a Shield Dash to hit him at the end of his attack, then run away.
7. When the Arishok Dashes at you, dodge his Dash and use Adrenaline once or twice, Shield Dash to close the distance and at this point you have two options: The first is if you close the distance to the Arishok before the Dashing animation is finished. If this situation has occurred, use Assault. The second is if you close the distance and the Arishok has just finished the running animation, if this situation has occurred, use Shield Bash. In either case, immediately run away after you’ve used your ability. Then repeat the Pillar/Shield Dash strategy.
8. If you use Assault when the Arishok has finished his Dash, you run the risk of being hit with his Impale attack, which is something you REALLY do not want to happen.
9. You want to utilize the Pillar/Shield Dash and Arishok Dash Dodge/Adrenaline/Shield Bash/Assault strategies for this fight.
10. If you brought a good amount of potions, you can attempt to use an Adrenline/Shield bash attack on the Arishok when he uses his Multiple Slashing Stationary Spin attack. If you can time your Shield Dash to Shield Bash properly, many times you can avoid taking damage. Once again, you need to do this in a hit and run fashion.
11. Use Second Wind when you run out of Stamina (Using Adrenaline and activated abilities according this strategy should allot you enough time for Second Wind to recharge)
12. BE PATIENT. This is an end of Act boss fight, so it will take a while. Don’t be tempted to wail on the Arishok, he will just Knock you to the ground 3 to 4 times in a row, then Impale you mid-attack.

I noticed a lack of S&S Templar builds; I think it's mostly due to many players enjoying the high damage 2 Hand - Vanguard/Reaver/Berserker. I've palyed through like that once all ready and I wanted to try something a little different, and a little unorthodox. Plus, the Roleplaying aspect of having a Templar was fun as well.

I'm going to take a haitus from DA:2 for a bit to play some Origins. I've clocked like 500 or so hours playing DA:2 now and I need a break. But, when I return I have a couple more unorthodox build ideas: One is a Ninja build, one is a Yin-Yang Mage and one I'm going to try making a Rogue into a Whirlwind Warrior that utilizes "Reverse Tanking" since I miss the Dual Wield Warriors from Origins.

Once you know that all but 2 of the Arishok's attacks hit in a 45% angle in front of him and very long range in front, trying to run forward away from him will get you killed, its quite easy to move to his left or right side when he begins an attack and be missed completely. There are only 2 attacks that you can't avoid this way, the pick you up like a rag doll and the swirly 360 hitter which he only does once he's health is below half and his out of potions.

Knowing this makes the fight a lot easier and kiting unnecessarily, well, unless you consider side stepping kiting.

Take a look the ultimate vanguard thread and the arishok fight there, you will see how side stepping his attacks is easy. This works for the ancient rock wraith as well, takes some practice.

Great advice! It takes some timing, but once you figure out which swing the Arishok is going to use, it works quite well, especially with this build. Using the Etched Ring of the Twins makes this a viable strategy, as you won't get bounced back if you touch the Arishok on accident. I knew of this with the Ancient Rock Wraith, but not the Arishok. Thanks for the advice!

Thank You for this guide, i ve grown tired of my vangrd/zerk/reaver and been wanting to try templar.

However i just have one concern doesn't magic resistance reduce the duration of any buff you have on you.

And i'm suprised you pick adrenaline over barrage. Adrenaline only has 5% damage increase.

I think that the issue with with Magic Resistance, at least in regard to Haste, was fixed with 1.03. I'm not 100% sure, but I know that Bioware was aware of the bug according to their pre-patch post. I couldn't find the post on the social network, but I found it quoted elsewhere - here is the link: http://www.gamebansh...-the-works.html. From my personal in game experience, Haste and Greater Haste have normal duration; I normally am under a constant state of Haste with my modified Efficient Anders Build.

In regards to taking Adrenaline over Barrage, it basically up to personal preference. Either one is effective in it own way. The reason why I chose Adrenaline, is because upgraded it gives you +8% damage per hit for the duration of the buff (Which is about 10 seconds long or so); Adrenaline can also be stacked. So fully upgraded, I'd usually rush into the mix of battle straight toward an Elite, Shield Bash it right away to setup a STAGGER and with the tactics I had setup, Merrill would Crushing Prison for a CCC, the Varric would Brand, and DISORIENT with a Pinning Shot. At this point, I'd boost up Adrenaline about 3 or 4 times for +32% damage and CCC with Assault and Battery which, would effectively kill the Elite, or at least get it pretty damn near death. In the Case that it didn't die instantly, I'd just Pommel Strike it and Merril would Chain Lightning to finish it off.

Again, it's really up to you because I could see how Barrage would be useful for upkeeping a constant rate of damage. But I was just trying to add versatility with a Burst Damage Spike.

I think I am on about Hawke #6, various classes and builds.

With the set-up you suggest, I beat the Rock Wraith in one attempt for the first time (I always play hard). I know I kinda suck. But, nonetheless, I attribute my success to the excellent way you found to balance Hawke and party members.

Thanks! It was very satisfying to not reload that fight for once.

Having fun in general with the build too. Cheers!

I prefer Reaver/Templar rather than using Berserker. Keep abilities all active. For example.

This is a good and helpful build. Has been helping me in playing a warrior. I do tailor it to my liking though.

Do you have any suggestions for tactics at earlier levels, (7,10,ect). First time playing a warrior in this game and I am having a litte trouble getting it to work just right.

Yes, only one per set. Put it in the piece with the least armor (gloves usually).

Edit; Never mind folks, I rolled over them without losing a single party member… my god this build rocks!

Feel free to take this build and run with it. One of the most enjoyable things that I've found with games such as DA:2 is seeing what other people have come up with and improving it to your playing style.
