I've seriously never done this but want to try it now, only I can't figure out how to import the characters I created into the game (beyond the main PC). How is this done? I prefer excruciating detail over "and then a miracle occurs" leaps please.
Also, is there any way to delay getting some of the characters until a later time when they will join the group?
Thank you!
How to make a custom party?

Start a multi-player game with you controlling all the characters i.e. maximum of 6, then save that game... hard save not just a quick save.
Exit the game and move your saved game from the "mpsave" folder into the "save" folder.
You can now Open or adjust with shadow-keeper & play your game as normal.
Parking character at different locals requires modding experience and is beyond simple explaining.
You could replace one person with different stats i.e Branwen becomes Ted the bard.

Thank you, but how exactly do I start the game with me controlling all the characters? I can create them and export them, but can't figure out how to start the game with more than one.

You need to start a multiplayer game (click "multiplayer"), click "protocol", click "serial". Then click "create game". Then click "new game." It will ask you to name your session and create a password, but it doesn't matter what you call it or what you choose for a password. Later, you will follow the same sequence of clicks and click "load game" when you get to the last screen. You have to check the little checkmark next to each character and make it light up every time you start your game.
EDIT: I just tried it on my BGT, and it required me to select "ICP-IT" for my protocol instead of "serial" before it would work. I guess you will have to experiment to see which protocol works on your system.
I suppose you could move your multiplayer save game into the single player saves folder as ussnorway suggests, but I never found that necessary myself. I just start through the multiplayer button when I want to play with six characters I've created.
You also have the option to create some number of characters less than six, and then use Bioware characters to fill in the blank spots, if you want to.

Thank you, that worked great. I did have to use ICP-IT for BGT instead of serial. I've found also that I can add a new character at any point in the game by exiting the session and then re-starting it (since I didn't make 6 characters to start with).

Multiplayer mode has a lot of annoying extra key strokes, like having to hit the spacebar multiple times to pause/unpause, etc. little things like that. That's why most people who make their own party via multiplayer move the save from mpsave to save folder and run it as a normal single player game. Easier gameplay.
Also, there's a tweakpack option for enhanced multiplayer add/leaving - in vanilla if you dismiss a player created PC they are gone, but with the tweak option, you can have them stand in place.

Level 1 NPCs mod lets you alter the 19 Bioware NPCs (Minsc, Jahiera &&) so they can usually have the class and kit that you prescribe. (If only it altered race and alignment too!) Thus you can have your cake and eat it too.
I found it much better to move the save file to the single player directory after I got the game going. Avoided all sorts of annoyances.
Remember you can always move the save folder temporarily back to the multiplayer directory if you need to add a new NPC created by you. That is the only time, after you get the game started, you will need to move the save folder.
