I have to know this:

I have just spoken to Sten about his sword and I have promised him that I would look for it. I have read in other forums that you must talk to Dwyn to I have and he says nothing reguarding the sword. I must know what do I have to do to get his sword?

Preferably in detail

First go to Lake Calenhad (the small area where you can take a boat to the mage tower.) There is a scavenger there. Talk to him. He'll send you off to someone else (can't remember who), that person then sends you to a guy just outside of Orzimmar. And THAT dude finally sends you to Dwyn, and that will activate Dwyn talking about the sword.

I have a similar problem. The scavenger sends you off to Faryn or something similar in Frostback Mountains, who tells you that he [very conviently] sold the sword on his way to Dwyn. At this moment my quest refuses to update in the journal, which results in Dwyn not mentioning anything about a sword.It doesn't matter how many times I speak to him, I get the 'Sten +2 Approval' message, but no quest update. With no quest update, I cannot get into Dwyn's chest, which requires a key. Can anyone help me with his bug at all?

You can get the key by killing Dwyn, although I'm not sure if this'll get around your bug.

You haven't killed Dwyn have you at Redcliffe? I did, foolishly, before I got Sten's sword and now it won't update *sigh*

I killed him before Sten's quest and it didn't give me the key

Interesting.  I had the exact opposite.  After talking to the scavenger, I could already talk to Dwyn, bypassing Faryn entirely.

i killed dywn at red cliffe since he would not fight for me, but if you go into his house after he is dead, there is a silver chest in the back right room that you can open that has sten's sword in it.

He's very close to the entrance/exit at the docks.

He should appear directly to the left of where you zone into the area.  Literally right beside you.

The thread title sent my mind (back) to the gutter.

Did you make sure to have Sten with you for all parts?  I had him outside Orzammar and he threatens the merchant which gets you the next bit of information.
