Whoops, finally done summing up the results.

Method used: loaded each page, then used my browser's "Find in Page" function to find how many times each name occurred.

Accuracy: somewhat inaccurate, because some replies mention a squad member more than once in discussion, or because of quotes some names appear twice, but I did account for the replies that mention that they do NOT like a certain character.

Personal Opinion: looks like Kaiden is not as famous as a lot of people think, we might think this is because he's confirmed to be a squad member already but then again that didn't prevent Garrus, Tali and Liara from getting most votes whilst holding the same status, in fact even Jacob got more votes.

Jack got more votes than Ashley, which tells us how much ME2 squadmates actually mean to a lot of people.

Normally alien squadmates get more votes than humans, that is evident by the squadmates with over 100 votes list that is dominated by aliens except for one human which is Miranda.

from what Norman said squad mates wont work the same in ME3, so I'm thinking there aren't any permanent people.

I think there will be very few permanent squashes. I think at some point they probably move off to join their people or something like that. If I had to choose it would be

 Is this including the ones we already know about? Or just which ones we want to see? If it's the second I choose:

Legion, Tali, Wrex, Mordin, Miranda. I honestly couldn't care any less about the Virmire survivors, neither of them are very interesting and I would be totally fine seeing them get scrapped to make room for more interesting characters. Garrus and Liara are great, but if it came down to it there are just other characters I'd choose over them. 

Those characters are my favorites from the universe, and are all unique and are interesting together. If I could only have 5 it would be them, but I doubt Bioware could be that cruel. I think my dream squad that's possible including the past 2 games would be:

The 5 confirmed (Me1 minus Wrex, James Vega) plus Mordin, Miranda, Legion, and maybe Wrex. I think Bioware made a big mistake in allowing those 3 from Me2 to die. They are by far the most important in relevance to the central storyline (Miranda because of her connections with Cerberus, Mordin because of his genius and being the only Salarian in the group, and Legion because of his knowledge of the Geth). I think Bioware should have designed the final Mission so that those three couldn't die unless Shepard did, because of how important they will be in Me3.

Did you account for people who used 'VS' and 'Virmire Survivor' as well? I doubt it'll change the findings drastically, but it will probably give Ash and Kaidan a little bit of a boost.

EDIT: Oh, and there is the issue of people commonly misspelling Kaidan as Kaiden. I'd say I've seen it misspelled more than not.

EDIT 2: Okay, looking under results for 'Kai/Kaidan/Kaidan' I came up with 78, add in the 21 results for 'VS/Virmire Survivor' and that brings Kaidan to 99, just short of 100. But in an unofficial polling like this where people's responses won't always be uniform and with hand-counting involved, the numbers are going to fluctuate slightly. I just thought 16 seemed pretty low for Kaidan.

Ashley will probably have more results too if you include 'Ash', as well as the 21 'VS/Virmire Survivor' results.

 Tali:  Not only is she a valuable character to me personally ( That and she stuck with you through both games.) , but is important diplomatically due to the Quarians being a major ally in the reaper invasion.  

Garrus: He's just made of win, and because he stuck with you through both games. That says something about him.  Absolute integrity.  

Legion:  I like him because he has a lot of valuable information and is important diplomatically due to the Geth probably being one of the strongest forces in the galaxy militarily speaking. 

and....

I really don't know anybody else on my top five.  I think they are all very important (with the exception of Jack...really don't like her).  Personally, I'd prefer just to have them all.  But my all time Favorite team is Garrus and Tali. They both stay by your side till the end in both games and I absolutely LOVE THEM.
