Kaidan, Wrex, and Jack for sure. I'd like Kasumi also but not sure they'll make her permanent. Can Gianna Parasini be my 5th please, BioWare? So many great characters...I hope they change the permanent status up depending on choices you made in previous games though...so my Shepard who romanced Miranda would have her as a permanent one but in another Shepard's playthrough maybe she's off with her sister. It would just be nice to have different people available so each playthrough will be a truly unique experience.

Miranda, Zaeed, Legion, Garrus, and Jack. I also love Mordin and Kasumi, but I am completely fine with them not being squaddies.

Taking out my five dead characters (Kaidan, Tali, Thane, Grunt, and Miranda)...and thinking about who has to be an actual squad member rather than just who my five favorite characters are...

GARRUS:  In caps on purpose.  He is my Shepard's best friend, is completely committed to not just saving the galaxy but making it a better place, and he's a badass. 

JACK:  Where else would she go?  Had a fling with her so she's a quasi-love interest, but my Shepard is committed to "fixing" her, for better or worse.  She needs Shepard, and he needs her.  Plus, biotics are extremely helpful since Shepard isn't one.

ASHLEY:  Didn't realize I could romance in ME1...I've turned this into my own personal canon of Shepard only realizing a girl is interested if she throws herself at him (Liara, Jack's fling).  LOVED teaming up with her in ME1.  She was witty, passionate, and felt "real."  

JACOB:  He's a soldier.  He belongs on the battlefield.  He left the Alliance because they weren't doing enough, now he'll leave Cerberus to join the Action Jackson that is Shepard.

Tough call on the fifth member.  Wrex is needed to rebuild the Krogans.  Liara is the shadow broker.  Mordin needs to be on the Normandy, but I don't have to have him fighting by me.  Didn't care for Samara or Legion's characters...but...

LEGION:  By default.

Garrus is really my only mandatory want. And even on that I'm flexible. But in terms of pure characterization, I'd go with: Garrus, Tali, Miranda, Jack, Grunt.

Although I am going to miss Kasumi something fierce.
