Ok so I was just thinking about it and I think I've figured it out.

I'm gonna start with the Biotic "Blade" first because I think it's explanation is simpler.

First of all I'd don't think its a blade per say. I think it would probably work more like a lance.

Its considered really hard to focus Biotic energy into the large scale and wild attacks we've seen, so focusing it to such a point that it could be used as a blade just doesn't make sense.

However, while you can't make a fine edge with it, you can focus a large amount of push into a small area. Imagine you used an ability like Throw but only targeted an area an inch square on some ones chest at close range.
The energy wouldn't have enough time and distance to disperse and would effectively act as a hole punch. Think of a finger into jello. Its blunt but has enough force over that short distance to pierce and to do massive damage causing near instantaneous death.

Omni-Blade

I believe the explanation is in the Codex entry. It says that inside every Omni--tool there is a little micro manufacturing suite that allows it to scan schematics of items and assemble a replica using common materials. The material used in this process is lovingly known as Omni-jel.

Wel what if you weaponized this process. Use Omni-gell to quickly assemble a sharp strong piece of material a few inches long and then either re convert it to Omni-gell or just leave it in the victim.

I'm not saying the whole "blade" is one of these Omni-gel creations. Instead look at the cinematic version of Shep. The blade is actually much thinner and can be seen coming out of the center of his fist. I believe its at the ten end of the gameplay trailer.

So what do you think? Am I getting on the right track?

Probably. I think the people that dont understand it simply assume that the omni-tool is nothing but a hologram, but as the codex notes, it does contain other factors such as the mini-facturing.

I believe the blad is a combination of concentrated light, not quite laser, but enough to burn, along with an electrical current.

Patrick Weekes' (you know, one of those writer guys) explanation (via Twitter): "diamond monoblade created from canonically present omni-tool fabrication tech, charged with ME [mass-effect] or plasma field".

I think I like the OP's description better...:D

That's much easier than that... to use the omni-blade, you need to press a button...

then, something awesome happens.

Well it has an explanation now. People should stop complaining, but they won't.

The OP's description was basically the same exact friggin thing, but longer and at the same time less specific.

Why does everyone think the Omnitool is the same as the Omniblade? I thought the Omniblade was a completely separate piece of technology that goes on the right arm and is specially made for cutting and whatnot and is made of hard sharp stuff....

EDIT: Also the Omniblade is pretty realistic, what with kinetic barriers and all the long firefights and stuff close ranged combat with lethal weaponry would be very useful and whoeever in the ME universe who invented the Omniblade would have made a lot of money (unless its just specially for Shepard or something.)

i was hoping for the adept to simply use their fist and bioticsmash enemies faces in. but i guess you need some kind of blade to penetrate defenses since biotics cant on their own. melee should be more accessible and even tho i never melee in ME, i might have to pick it up if its an easy OSOK. which could actually be kindof a problem for me to grasp.a blade thats more effective then a gun. i can understand soldiers having shields to stop guns, but why not have have an invention like armor to stop knifes? wouldnt that be a good idea too? CQC is almost the defining atribute of combat in ME2, and knifes are still OSOK. i guess they spent too much time investing in creating protections that block abilities instead of something that stops a butter knife, or diamonds whatever.

They probably will. I don't have the exact quote, but I'll paraphrase what Casey said in the Bioware Pulse Q&A. All classes have the Omni-Blade and will make use of it in a variety of circumstances, such as executing stealth kills. However, each class has its own unique heavy melee attack (executed by holding down the melee button). For the soldier, the heavy melee is the Omni-Blade punch we've seen all week in E3 demos. I would expect that classes like the Adept and Vanguard will have some sort of biotic punch or blade as their heavy melee instead. He made it very clear that not every class would use the Omni-Blade for their heavy melee attack.

Here the real explanation:

Bioware thought it would be a cool thing to add a melee weapons, so they did -- and then came up with some sort of bogus plausible sounding in-game mumbo jumbo to explain it away.

I've always wanted to be able to biotic punch people...all they need to do now is make sure you can do biotic interrupts.

Blades are is in to fascinate the simple gamers who play cod all day every day, can't have multiplayer without knife lunging. And because every game needs an awesome button that enables something awesome to happen, everybody loves that, guaranteed 5 million pounds/dollars/euros etc etc.

current.

But they [bioware] flat out call it a "holographic switchblade"!
