First off, my specs:

AMD Athlon™ II X3 445 Processor 3104 MHz
1.99 GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1.00 GB
Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)
6.1.7600.16385
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later
Digital copy, downloaded via Steam

The issue at hand: about five minutes after loading into ME2, I'll be running around the Normandy, trying to pick up companion quests (this is right after the Collector Ship mission) and I'll be able to get through about one full conversation of dialogue (i.e. listening to Samara talk about Morinth, then accepting the Morinth quest) before the game freezes, complete with sound skipping, and I'm forced to manually turn off and restart my computer.  I have not tested this while on a planet or in combat, as I'm not sure I could even get that far without just giving up out of frustration.

This is the first time in some months that I've played ME2, and in the interim my old hard drive died and I transferred all my information to a new one.  I can play pretty much any other Steam game without any issues, including Bioshock, Company of Heroes, Terraria, Dragon Age: Origins, and Portal 2, as well as non-Steam game's such as Dragon Age 2 (purchased via EA store) and Starcraft 2.

I have had recent issues with Heroes of Newerth, where on occasion my HoN game will lock up in a manner similar to what I'm getting now with ME2, only the HoN lockup can often be resolved by just waiting a minute or so, and doesn't require a hard restart.  I've tried waiting up to five minutes for ME2 to resolve itself, but I have not had any success in doing so.  It always requires a hard restart.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you all in advance.

What is your graphics driver version, not the version indicated by dxdiag, but Nvidia's own designation (ie 258.96, 266.56)?

275.33 is my driver version.

As an update, this kind of hard lock just happened tonight both in Bioshock and in Heroes of Newerth. Each time I tried to restart, if it did not restart successfully, I would get one long beep followed by two short beeps from my computer, if that's any help.

That particular Geforce driver is a bad choice. You need something slightly older like the 270 version.

Hmm, ok, I'll give that a shot, thanks.

258.96 is supposed to be the last driver that works well with Mass Effect 2 on older Nvidia graphics cards.  Download those drivers, use a program called DriverSweeper (http://download.cnet...4-75219868.html) to wipe out your newer drivers and then install the 258.96 drivers.

The change to 258.96 seems to have helped a lot. I was able to scan several planets and play an entire mission (Miranda's loyalty mission) before closing the game out and playing a round of Company of Heroes. I played CoH fine until near the end, when my comp froze on me again.

So basically I think the driver change helped a lot, and I'm starting to think either my RAM or my vid card are just getting old and will need to be replaced. But for now things are functional for the most part. Thanks everyone.
