The main points to why the kid died are as follows:
1. People die in War. Men, Women, Children.
2. From an artistic standpoint, nothing jolts a audience more in a war story then the lost of an innocent. It allows the viewers to connect with the plight Sheppard faces.

On that note, can't wait to play through the game "Probably second playthrough " and try my best to screw everything up. Just to see the universe bight the dust in an awesome/dramatic cutscene.
