So what did the Protheans REALLY look like?

From what we see in ME 1 in the flashbacks they appeared humanoid-ish with some features that look like the husks.  We see statues or bodies of them on Ilos...

In ME 2 the Collectors are apparently the Protheans or once the protheans but EDI says they were re-written in DNA to be slaves of the Reapers but did it change their appearence?

To those who've done the little side quest in the mine where you get another vision of the reapers invasion of the protheans, the vision seems to correct itself from the husk looking appearence to the collector form

So which is it?

We've seen what they look like. We saw Prothean statues in ME1. No, don't look at the codex picture in ME2. That is a corruption. The actual statues in ME1 (and I believe there is one in Hock's vault) show what Protheans look like.

They are very humanoid with tendrils coming out of their faces. They may or may not have very long, tendril like fingers as well. (hard to tell because it could just be a Prothean artistic style)

The Proths orig look like the statues. After a failed attempt at making a Reaper, the reapers Indoc the mass numbers that remained. When their mentality broke down, after being Indoc for so long and being cloned. The Reapers rewrote their genetic code and they became the Collectors that you see in ME2.

I think that's right...

^ Correct. The stone statues on Ilos did not have any of the markings that those husk-like figures, I think from the codex, have, never mind the glow on them.

The pic in the Codex is accurate, correct? Is there some other pic of the Prots, other than the statues?

It shows dying protheans, in ME1 it showed only unclear humanoids [concept probably wasn't ready], now it clearly shows that they are look like collectors. I bet it's some sort of retcon, not even a retcon because they've never showed protheans.
About statues, if Bioware wanted to show us how prothean look like they wouldn't make Vigil shining ball.

I'm sure they had feathers...

T-Rex was one cool mofo until there was the chance it was just a giant chicken with a mean temper.

I think Protheans looked like Thorian Creepers, but with those face tentacles.

This has been asked befgore and there is a good thread on it. 3rd post down are pix from the game of the vision Shepard has of the Protheans being changed to collectors - having implants inserted etc.

And here the actual statues on Ilops for you which show no glowing bits and are quite unlike those in the codex. Go halfway down the page for the in-game screen shot of a statue from Ilos.

Ignore the point the OP makes about it being a husk like in the Codex as they are quite obviously different.

or this picture which is even better -
http://ru.masseffect...егория:Протеане
Click on the small picture once to go to another page, then again for a nice, clear quite large close up of a Prothean statue on Ilos.

And another one with Shep beside it. http://img90.imagesh...dsc00169xp6.jpg

They clearly shows a being with a tentacled face and long, very thin fingers. Very Cthulu, or Davy Jones from Pirates of the Carribean-like faces.

This is what I see. A lot of fan speculation, a statue made of ROCK ( thus no blinki-blinki ), some fuzzy and twisted visuals, and ( here's the kicker ) a photo in the Codex. A photo produced by THE DEVS. So to say the Codex is wrong, seems kind of stupid.

OT... Truer than you think... One of the backstories of Illithids hints very heavily at the fact they were a future hyperadvanced civization who went back in time in order to prevent their destruction...
This is also implied by the Aboleth: they fear no one, because they inherit the memories of their ancestors, so they remember the creation of every species in existence, all but the Flayers who just "appeared", so they are pretty scared of them...

But seriously, the general body shape was probably that, more or less...

Protheans are bald bipedals with tentacles coming out of their mouth (around 30cm-40cm long assuming they're human size), and incredibly long fingers (don't remember how many). I don't recall seeing any Prothean legs so can't say about them.

What I want to know is what this new "The Prothean" character DLC will be.  It could be anything, really. An actual Prothean that looked like the ones in the statues would be almost too creepy to have as a squadmate. Could it be a Collector, then?  Or maybe it's something possessed by a Prothean intelligence like Virgil.  It could even be just someone who studies the Protheans, maybe having come into contact with a beacon.  Who knows? Chris Priestly 'corrected' that part of the Collector's Edition announcement, so maybe it's not coming at all.

The codex says that Sovereign is a Geth ship (or at least the ME1 codex did). The codex is not the word of god. It is the encyclopedia Shepard has access to in game and thus is prone to in game popular belief.
