The sound of fail sounds like this:

"In order to resolve issues with sound affecting performance disable the sound."

Disable the sound?

Wow.  What a great idea.  Lets write some more bug fixes in the same spirit:

"In order to fix texture issues in the game turn off your monitor."

"In order to resolve crashes back to your desktop ensure you do not leave your desktop."

"In order to improve the performance of your computer ensure you have all available memory by not loading Dragon Age."

"If issues persist while running Dragon Age refrain from purchasing it completely."

Damn, I got this down.  Any openings in the PR/Bug hunting department?

Oh, and is there another fix coming for the no sound issue, (and if so, when?) or is the "turn off your sound" patch "working as intended"?

Or better still - has anyone found out some way around this?  Bah... I'm probably just going to go buy another sound card tomorrow... but I'm not happy about it.

Why can't every company release like Blizzard....

.... "turn off the sound"... <chuckle>....

Cheerio.

I had sound failing when i was playing on win 7 and using my Soundblaster x-fi because drivers are ****ty, using onboard should work fine if you are using the same card when your sound is failing

You know, that is a great point... Blizzard has had some bugs in their games, no doubt, but they never release anything that blatantly won't work. Having 5 year spans of game development does that, I guess...

This is messed up.

1) The game worked perfectly for 40 hours of play. Then it would only work if I disabled sound.

2) I went out and bought a Soundblaster X-Fi.Titanium and disabled onboard sound. Again, the game starts working perfectly, all video settings maxed. Runs smooth as silk.

3) Next time I go to play it is back to stuttering over the sound again. This is with the X-Fi Titanium installed.

- Disabling the sound = runs perfectly.

- Disabling hyperthreading = runs better.

WTF man.

Is this even acknowledged as a bug? What do I do now - spend another day troubleshooting this buggy pre-beta crap?

I'm unhappy. My only recourse it to spread my discontent. Please pacify me by fixing this so that I don't have to further my nerd rage.

Blizzard isn't perfect, but they have more credibility then "disable your sound."  When Diablo 2 comes out I will never see a work around that says "disable sound."  I will always buy their games because of that.

This is the first Bioware game I have purchased since Baldur's Gate because, I mean, Baldur's Gate.  I still have the package sitting on the shelf... right there... right next to Quake, Civ 4, Half Life... (the list goes on)... it was genius.

I've always felt that one of the big reasons people pirate games is that they get into situations where they feel ripped off when they buy a game.  Right now I feel ripped off.  As genius and deep as DA is it doesn't matter because all I hear is "crackle crackle" when I play at 1 FPS .

I would never pirate a game, but I would go one further with Blizzard --- I would kick anyone in the balls that pirated a Blizzard game, because those guys have integrity.  And that's rare, so my right foot will defend it.

I'm so angry and without recourse Bioware is turning me into the forum troll I hate.

Fix the sound!  Hell, acknowledge the sound is a problem!!  Where is my patch!

I had the opposite problem.  I had a Realtek onboard and it was all messed.  So I went out and bought a Soundblaster X-Fi, and it worked great.  Then it randomly stopped working again.

Messed up.

The shiny on this game is fading.  I just wish they would either fix it or I would find something better to play.

As far as Blizzard in general having integrity, I agree with you... But their class balancing department is cruel beyond all belief... its a constant roller coaster with them. Especialy with some classes.

Paladins can't do anything but heal

Paladins suck at DPS but can finnaly tank.

Paladins are terrible healers but are the ONLY class that can AoE tank.

Paladins are the best tanks and are nearly invincible in PVP

Paladins are the second best tank and are better healers and are invincible in PVP

Paladins are the best tanks in the history of the game and completely trivialize half the raid bosses AND get new, cooler, and better healing spells. And their DPS goes up. They are slightly less invincible in PvP though!

And dont even get me STARTED on Druids/Warriors/Warlocks.

Although that's true specifically with WoW (I had a Shadow Priest at one point, so the nerf bat hit me in my scrotum hard)... "Blizzard" is way more then WoW.

In fact, comparing DA to WoW is probably the weakest comparison.  WoW has had years of development and is a completely differenent type of game.

Better to compare it to some of their stand alone products... but I do completely agree with you on the class Balancing thing.  Still - you can play the game... I would gladly have a class balancing issue in DA to contend with and be able to play over not being able to play.

DA sucks right now because I can't play it anymore.  After completing 50% of the game I am forced to just sit here and wait in silence.

I'm spending my (precious little) time looking around the net to see if there is some spot/resource I have missed, but as far as I'm concerned there should be a big flag that pops up when I load that game that says:

"WE ARE AWARE OF THE SOUND/CPU MAXING ISSUE, ZOMG WE ARE SORRY, WE ARE WORKING DAY AND NIGHT TO FIX THEM WITHOUT REST.  WE KNOW WHAT IT IS AND HOPE TO HAVE IT FIXED BY XXXDAY.   WE WILL BUY YOU A BEER TO MAKE UP FOR IT."

But it sounds like Bioware perfers to apply the same methods to their clients as their audio issues - by turning off the sound.

Work around: (This is a little extreme):

So far this is working - but buying a new audio card worked too for about 10 hours and then the problem started again, so I'm not sure how long this will last for.

Previously I had been using Windows Vista Pro 32 Bit. I got a spare 200gb harddrive I had kicking around and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I installed it vanilla and let it update itself. Installed Steam, and Dragon Age, and nothing else. BOOM - it works. Sound works flawlessly. All video settings are maxed.

I haven't changed a single setting in Win7.

So there you have it for now. I hope this holds out until I am done with this game, or they present a patch that fixes the sound.

I just reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit hoping the same thing would happen...I let it update then ran DA.

However the sound still destroys the performance for me.

Have you guys tried disabling EAX and stuff like that? Switching to gamer mode in the soundblaster settings is also worth a try. Go to creative homepage and run autoupdate if you are missing the programs to change those settings.

And the funny thing about it is that there is a class balancing issue. Have you even played a mage? The best party would be 4 mages with one being an arcane warrior. But I guess you can defend it with lore. You know: mages are uberl337 and that's why they are so feared. Still...

I absolutely feel you. I had to fickle around for days to finally finish the game. And all of that killed my desire to immidiately replay it. Yesterday, I installed Arcanum with the all-fixing fan-patch that came out last year, eight years after its release. Will it take that long to make DAO a smooth game? I certainly hope not. I understand that bug-fixing is a pain but wasn't there talk that the game had been finished for months, just having been pushed back to be released with the console versions? What has Bioware been doing all this time? It'll be Arcanum this week, complete BG Saga after that and hopefully by then there'll be a patch for Dragon Age. If not I'm cancelling my ME2 preorder and wait for a few days after release to buy it.

Sound issues? And they told you to disable sound? WTH! Wynne or Fail? As much as I share your pain guys, we can't do anything beside wallow in dismay and perhaps wait for a subtle patch than can address so many issues with DAO.
