Never has someone's plight affected me as much as that of poor, beleaguered Refund Guy. Years of standing, pleading, waiting, yearning, aching, just to be afforded his basic human rights. Just to get that refund. Through two games we've followed him, wishing we could reach out and give him a hug, tell him that everything's going to be okay, that the cosmos will listen to him, eventually, and that the turian shopkeeps and salarian warehouse blowhards of the galaxy would eventually recognise the importance of his quest for fair remuneration.
We have been given tentative information that minor characters from the fringes of the previous games will make an appearance, like the esteemable Conrad Verner, for example. But I've yet to hear word of this more central character. It's early yet, of course, and there is so much information still to come, but people, it's important we get our voices heard now, to show how we support Refund Guy in his endeavours, and how we recognise his significance to the ME universe.
Now, what if he was trying to get a refund on a faulty massive energy weapon, the kind that caused the rift on Klendagon? If only he could get his refund, he could purchase a working version, and join up with Shep to help bring down the Reapers. And of course, look at the parallels between Refund Guy's plight and Shep's: how many times was Shep dismissed by the Council and others? Just like poor Refund Guy. There's a story here to be told, people.
Here's how I'd like to see it play out, one of two ways:
1) I'll accept that perhaps Refund Guy wasn't trying to get a refund on something as important as a massive energy weapon. I'll accept that maybe, just maybe, he was a guy, trying to get back his money, and his overall plight wasn't as important to the central game story. If this is the case, then I hope the good people of BioWare will see fit to finally allow Refund Guy to get his refund, and that we will see him able to finally afford to buy that place with his partner, and we'll see them settle down, happy together after 4 or more years of fighting, pleading, worrying, fearing that their lives together would never be able to get started properly. And maybe we'll see them settled in a lovely little place on Earth, idyllic, beautiful, maybe a couple of kids running around, right before the Reapers invade ........ (this would lead to a nice little side mission where we had to save them from the invasion - think of the possibilities!)
2) He doesn't get his refund and he goes completely postal, and ends up as a side mission where Shep has to bring him down before he kills a bunch of hostages in the warehouse district. The possibilities here are wonderful: Shep can have the chance to talk him down through peaceful means and reason with him, showing him s/he understands how difficult it is to deal with petty bureaucracy (you can bring up the example of the "council" and "ah yes, 'reapers'", to show him you recognise the perverse nature of society and its judgement of those who don't wield the necessary power or influence), or you can bring him down with sheer fire power and watch his lifeless body flop to the floor with a pained expression on his face, as the past four years of pain and hopelessness and despair flash before his eyes one last time.
I'm sure there are many other ways the importance of Refund Guy to the Mass Effect universe can be realised, if only we allow ourselves to dream, if only we allow ourselves to hope. If only we can make the good people of BioWare recognise what an influential, iconic figure this man is.
My fellow BSNians, don't let Refund Guy's last four years of heartache have been in vain. Don't let our interest in his story go to waste. Show your support, let BioWare know we need a resolution to this issue, and let them know we are prepared to FIGHT FOR THE REFUND.
