After looking at Mass Effect 3's demonstration at E3, I noticed a few things:

1) the Reapers have landed on Earth a very short time after the events of Arrival even though it was assumed that Shepard had destroyed the mass relay that would link the Reapers to the galaxy

2) Batarians are now made into the Reapers servants, similar to husks

From this I can only assume that Shepard had failed to stop the reapers and they had perhaps used the mass effect left over from the mass relays to travel to Earth. They must have also saved to Batarians somehow because a lot of them have been made into husks

It'd be kind of funny if Shepard could stop the Reapers in ME2. You'd have to fail that mission to import to ME3.

It wasn't the only relay linking to deep space. It was the nearest known/explored relay to deep space. We don't know if ME3 starts the day after arrival or a month after arrival. And way to post spoilers for ME3 and ME2 in a no spoilers section.
