An interesting question.
Which pairings off all Mates in DA1+2 (including expansions) would be a good couple of friends?
Here are my speculations:

Dog+Dog: No explanation needed;)

Isabella+Zevran: Two dirty-talkers

Leliana+Sebastian: Both are faithful in the Maker, both work(ed) at the Chantry, both are good at heart etc
Maybe they would even have romantic feelings for each other?

Wynne+Bethany: Wynne would be a good *granny* for her, surely Beth would admire her.

Oghren+Varric: They are both quite different, but still, I think they would have plenty of fun together, especially while drinking.

Nathaniel+Aveline: The two most upright chars in DA (imO), would fit very well to each other

Fenris+Sten:Highly dangerous, but tenderhearted Stoics among themselves, do I need to say more?

I guess that only leaves Morrigan and Valenna. *Shiver*

I am inclined to think that Morrigan and Varric would get along. Not at first, mind you. Morrigan would be resistant of anyone trying to be friendly or charismatic. But I think Varric would easily and quickly see behind the abrasive facade, and the dark-haired one would eventually wind up sharing the occasional quip or sarcastic aside.

Carver & Shale might get along.

Anders & Alistair would get along until Anders blows up the chantry after that it would get awkward and possibly bloody

Merrill & Morrigan I think Merrill would probably look up to Morrigan.

I wonder who Loghain would get along with

Good question.
Spontaneous, I can't think of anyone.

Merrill and Morrigan wouldn't work. Morrigan only respects power. Merrill is too timid for her to tolerate. Morrigan would respect Velana more. They'd have more to talk about. Though Morrigan does have a wicked sense of humor at times for example her attempts at trying to get Sten to talk and or show an emotion. Why I think Velana and Morrigan would have more to talk about.

Loghain wouldn't really have much to talk with any companions you'd come across. He only respects a select few. Though he does have respect for millitary might. Since you don't have a Dalish Archer or some other skillled warrior he would acknowledge in your parties like ever? He wouldn't talk to most. He's too egocentric and focused on his own concerns to care what others think.

In short Loghain would only respect characters from other bioware games. Canderous Ordo and Zaeed Massani as examples. Basically strong millitant figures who are realistic and are willing to do whatever it takes for victory. Not many like that in the dragon age companion list. Even Shale seems to have more moral fiber than Loghain.

I think Loghain might like Aveline at first, but I highly doubt Aveline would respond well to Loghain.
Loghain might also like Fenris, seeing as he's a good warrior and relatively pragmatic when not talking about mages.

Aveline would want to kill Loghain. She was at Ostagar...

Which I noted. I was just saying Loghain might like Aveline, up until Aveline started mentioning the battle.

Aveline wouldn't mention the battle. She'd just stab her sword through his heart

Morrigan and Velanna would get along, and I can easily see Morrigan liking Merrill for working on the Eluvian despite Marethari's idiocy. She might even help her out were they ever to meet in the future.

Sigrun and Oghren might get along with Varric

Justice would..... um......

Sten and Fenris would get along. Both hate mages. In fact, I have this feeling Fenris might travel to Par Vollen or Seheron.

Zevran and Isabela no question about it.

Wynne, Bethany, and Anders.

Anders? Liking the Chantry loyalists Wynne and Bethany? I find that pretty doubtful.

Bethany isn't loyal to the chantry and Wynne is only loyal because acting against them means death to all mages, but she does view it as a prison.

But Wynne is also merged with a spirit just like Anders, so they have something in common that only a select few people know about.

The mage from Anders personal quest: ''Maybe Bethany was right, the circle isn't that bad''
Sounds chantry loyalist to me.
And when have Wynne said that? The closest I get to her even having a shred of resistance against the circle and chantry is that she doubts it sometimes, not a particularily strong thing to say.

Carver and Oghren would likely get along. Much to the annoyance of anyone within earshot.

Loghain would be too busy flirting with Sister Patrice to bother socializing with any companions.

Loghain is not a bad person! He just doesn't want the bloody Orlesians to help.

Well I was more suggesting that they have much in common. Both believe they are doing the right thing and will cross any line to do so.

Yeah, but Loghain had justifiable reasons(would a patriot accept help from the people who've enslaved your country?), while Petrice... didn't really give me a reason as to why she wants The Qun gone.

She did. The Qun are heathens spreading a vile non-andrasian religion.

I won't get into the Justifiable part.

Thanks for clearing that up. Guess I wasn't really paying attention the same way i did in Origins.

... so long as Fenris never finds out about that whole selling elves to Tevinter slavers bit. ;)

I think Sigrun and Varric would get along well.

Carver would probably admire Sten, though Sten might be annoyed by Carver.

Oh, and Fenris and Zev might have an interesting relationship if they ever got around to comparing notes about life in Tevinter vs. Life with the Crows.

Noo. My Gaspode (dog) wouldn't get along with NotGaspode (da2 dog) Gaspode would just be annoyed by the DA2 dog. (I don't know why but I can just see a fight between the 2 dogs.. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE)

Seriously though - I could see Fenris and Zev getting along at least in some way as I could see Sten and Fenris.
While Merril & Velanna could be in a way obvious friends, there might be enough differences between them to compensate for the similarities, I could see some funny banter between them.

Hm, Shale and Fenris might also get along, I think.
I mean, Shale hates Mages too and Shale respects power.
Also, both of them search for the sense of their lifes, now that they're free.
Maybe they will find it together? =D

I don't see Morrigan getting along with Velanna at all... Morrigan, at the very least, actually has some sense and doesn't jump the gun and kill people out of sheer anger. She even felt remorseful toward Templars that Flemeth made a game of murdering for fun.

Velanna? Haha, no.

I can see Merrill getting along with Morrigan more since they're both awkward in social interactions... although in different ways.

Shale hated her former master... that was it. She respects both Morrigan and Wynne. She hates birds, not mages.
