So, Lord Commander Hudson keeps on saying how there will be fewer squadmates but more depth...is it true?

What exactly does he mean by more depth and fewer squadmates?

What do you think?

He means there will be fewer squadmates but each one will have more dialogue and character development. And frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

If I had to make a guess, I'd guess that while there would be fewer than a dozen squadmates (permanent, at least), those we do have have increased dialogue, comments, and characterization than we got in the non-character specific missions of ME2 (and ME1).

You have to hand it to Bioware; they do listen.

Wonder how many exactly? 6-9 max?

Hey if they fixed the problem of running into the calibrations wall so early into the game, ill be happy.

Less people to share more dialogue = win.

It means Mass Effect 3 is going to be so much deeper. Character wise. Also yeah, lots of death, reapers killing people, everything, boom.

And cheaper too... Less squad mates, less dialogue to record, less actors to hire. ;)

It's a shame some characters won't be able to have the same roles they might have had before, but if it means there's some meat and potatoes in my interactions with Miranda, I will make the sacrifice.

My guess is that we'll lose the non-LI. So off the squad:

Mordin (we already saw him in a non-squad role)
Legion (we already saw him in a non-squad role)
Grunt
Samara
Zaeed
Kasumi

On the squad, we will get Vega and the VS..

So our squad of 12 will be reduced to 8 at least (imo). Even if they do the whole optional teammate thing people are speculating about, they will have to do in-depth dialogue trees for at least those eight.

My personal wish for that statement: squadmate characters receive deeper relationships and conversations between one another. Create a sense of 'these people live and work together' in the crew.

But at the same time, utilize the plot specific roles of non-squadmates to make their parts more meaningful. There's a lot that can be done if you don't need to factor in that a character will be getting lugged around with Shepard everywhere.

I really can't wait for this. While I really liked all the squadmates in ME2 they did lack for deep character development and closer relationship paths (especially friendship), so I'm really excited to see what they do with fewer squadmates and more in depth interaction. :)

It's all well and good, just so long as it doesn't mean my shep has noone she wants to talk to. So far the only squad members any of my sheps have any interest in talking to are Garrus and Kaiden (and not all my sheps have much to say to K either).
Having deep characters is great but I do hope that they don't leave any LIs out in the cold, it would make little sense IMO.

We're gonna lose some LI too, they've already confirmed that. Kaidan/Ash, Liara, Tali & Garrus are confirmed as full-squaddies, that leaves Thane, Miranda, Jacob & Jack to be potentially axed. My guess is that two from these 4 will be gone (from permanent squad). Zaeed/Kasumi are almost automatically out since they were DLC. Samara/Morinth won't make it with another Asari already in party (Liara). Since Wrex, Mording and Legion are already known to be cameos/temprorary, that basically only leaves Grunt as a possible full-time.

It means Garrus will be better at calibrations and won't have to spend days, even weeks, to get the guns on the Normandy in top shape.

From the stuff i've looked at and heard it seems you get the 5 permanent companions throughout the game; that being Ashley/Kaidan, Garrus, Liara, Vega and Tali, then you'll get temporary companions for certain missions, like Anderson during the beginning of the game on Earth, like Liara for LotSB. Sounds good to me, that way we can interact with most past companions and characters but still maintain a good depth with each one as well, and a greater depth with those staying with you.

It means they couldn't get the funds to support the entire character range they had developed proper, so they had to cut on quality.

Can you point me to that confirmation? I've never actually heard that was confirmed.

I can certainly see it as possible that an LI will be given a non-squad role but I can't imagine Bioware not letting the player conclude the romantic arc. And considering that your ME1 LI and ME2 LI will apparently fight over you, Bioware is going to face a wall of rage if they don't give them all fair treatment. It will be of DA2 epic proportions.

What would be nice, if we could unlock the temp. squadmates as part of the new game plus as a bonus for those who like a robust character roster.
