So, Lord Commander Hudson keeps on saying how there will be fewer squadmates but more depth...is it true?

I can certainly see it as possible that an LI will be given a non-squad role but I can't imagine Bioware not letting the player conclude the romantic arc. And considering that your ME1 LI and ME2 LI will apparently fight over you, Bioware is going to face a wall of rage if they don't give them all fair treatment. It will be of DA2 epic proportions.
He did say that even though they may not be in your party there will still be romance content with them though, something along these lines if I remember correctly
Ah, perfect. So I see the early howling about Miranda has a basis in fact. Thanks very much Issac.
You didn't think we'd howl because of nothing, did you?

We have Liara - Biotics, Vega - Soldier. So a permanent squaddie would have to be tech.
Probably another Quarian or even a Batarian - a Batarian with boobies.

It means Garrus will be better at calibrations and won't have to spend days, even weeks, to get the guns on the Normandy in top shape.
Lol
But yes, less characters leaves room for more character depths. I also believe it will be 8 squaddies, let's hope so anyway.

Wonder how many exactly? 6-9 max?
My guess is that we'll lose the non-LI. So off the squad:
Mordin (we already saw him in a non-squad role)
Legion (we already saw him in a non-squad role)
Grunt
Samara
Zaeed
Kasumi
On the squad, we will get Vega and the VS..
So our squad of 12 will be reduced to 8 at least (imo). Even if they do the whole optional teammate thing people are speculating about, they will have to do in-depth dialogue trees for at least those eight.
Thane was saw in some ME3 Demo before E3 but not as squadmate, but possibly as cameo.
Also we'll get more new squadmates because playing entire game with just 2 Soldiers and 1 Adept will be boring and that would make missions like Suicide Missions impossible.

Because I'm a Talimancer.

IMO ditching some LIs and them not being permanent henchmen, justifying this with a deeper character development, is just another way of saying: sorry guys, we won’t bother, we have more important things to do, like counting money.
So Bioware: prove us you’re not sellouts and make the final game in this trilogy a game we will all love, not only your bosses. Make it a work of art not only a best selling product.

Mass Effect 2 gunned to be "The Dirty Dozen" IN SPEESH. Now that we're freed of such an arbitrary head count, characters will be added on a specific on-need basis, rather than to reach a total. That's what I hope, anyway.Delerius_Jedi wrote...
I'll take quality over quantity any day. Having 12 squaddies in ME2 was a mistake as it only led to paper-thin interactions with them and you barely got any dialogue before you hit the romance lockout. So yeah, fewer squadmates is definitely welcome news, gives them more space to make them into proper in-depth characters.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Easy for me to say since 2 of my favorite squadmembers have been confirmed as permanent squadmembers in ME3... Still, more depth and more dialogue is ALWAYS a good thing.
Or an entirely different idea; Squaddies are optionally permanent, depending on the choices you have made in ME and ME2...? what do you think?
From an ingame point of view this is easily the best idea to guarantee everyone gets the squad he/she wants most. However this would be incredibly hard to implement, not only would all of the squadmembers need tons of dialogue and depth, but if they're actually going to help out in the game (for example, tali could be used in ME3 for the tech part of a mission) you'd need multiple replacements for that squaddie. Say, you were going to have tech heavy mission and you need a tech expert (tali, legion, kasumi) to succeed in the mission, yet none of those squadmembers are with you at that point...
I like the idea a lot, but I also know it would be just too difficult to actually put it in the game.

Thats why really a revolving system with a few of the non permnant, spots is the only way I see it not turning into a cluster****, that or a large number of you former squad mates will perform on ship functions.

Because 12 squad-mates was such a good idea in ME2, let's add even more! Or.. not. I'd rather see quality over quantity.
