I was recently going through the Mass Effect wiki, when I stumbled across that e-mail conversation Ashley has with her sister.  She talks about her feelings for a man named James, and why she can't act on them as her sister wants her to.

I was just thinking that it would be neat if this turned out to be Vega.  This dude would fit Vega's profile of completing several tours of duty, since he got assaigned to dealing with pirates in the Kepler Verge (near the Terminus).  Also would explain his ignorance about galactic politics, since he's effectively out in the boonies for most of his career.  It also gives him a connection to Ashley, which might help explain why he's on your squad at the start of the game (i.e., Ashley asks him to help rescue Shep as a favor).

Yeah, I know this is kind of out there, but it would be neat to see happen!

Here's the e-mail, if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about:

From: Ashley Williams (ashley.m.williams@edenprime.mil.sa)

Sent: June 17, 2183 22:03 UT

To: Sarah Williams (randori-girl@ward37.amaterasu.civ.pub)

Subject: Re: Hey sis

James left today. He's been reassigned to one of the new Rapid Response Bases out in the Kepler Verge. Lucky bastard. It's like the ancient west out there — pirates and slavers coming out of the Terminus Systems all the time. He gets to play the cavalry, riding out in frigates any time someone's house gets burned down.

I made some speech about how he was a valuable asset to the squad and he
better make us look good out there, blah blah. I suck at speeches. I
was cribbing from something I read back in history class. I don't think
anyone noticed.

I'm going to miss him. Don't tell anyone.

So you think James is cute, eh? Yeah, well, when you said I should "go
for him" — not gonna happen, kiddo. See, we have rules about
"fraternization". You don't do The Deed with your fellow troops,
especially if they're under you in rank. There's all sorts of problems
that can happen when two people in the same unit get together.

Let's say your unit is in a tight spot. Some bug-eyed aliens are going
to overrun the galaxy. They eat babies, smell bad, and don't have
elbows. Nasty. You're told to guard the rear. To let everyone else
escape, someone is ordered "hold this spot until we're gone." Someone
has to be left behind. You think it's going to be someone you're
sleeping with?

I've served with these guys for eight months now. Yeah, some of them
make me feel tingly (and yeah, James was kinda scruffy-cute). I hope I
never have to decide who lives and who dies. But if I have to, my
decision can't be muddled up by magic-sparkly-hearts-and-stars feelings.

Anyways, I'm gonna knock off here. I've got dog watch in a few hours.
Want to get a shower and a meal before then. Talk to you tomorrow.

- Ash

What if you rescued Kaidan instead of Ashley?

They could probably figure out some way to tie his character to Kaidan. Maybe they meet during the time Alenko is a spectre, or in the gap between ME1 and ME2, or something.

Either way, it could be done. Hell, if Ashley died, Bioware could even make a scene where he reminisces about serving under her.

It would be great to tie him with Ashley but not Kaidan. Ain't realistic if everyone knows everyone. Even if Ash died, he could still be a great connection to her character, like you said he could bring the memory of her.

Very nice idea overall, wonder if that's BW's plan or the names are just a coincidence.

I'm guessing (see: hoping) that the name "James" is just a coincidence.

Well, yes, but that doesn't affect anything.  Either way, his first name is James, and thats all the guy in the e-mail is referred as.

yes, because there is definitely only one James in the whole Systems Alliance army.

Hey, I'm not trying to say that that definitely who he is. Just thinking it would be neat if we got a character with that kind of connection.

@Mega: nah, the person is always referred to as James. Since Shep can have anything as his first name, this definitely isn't him. Plus, he first met Ashley during the geth attack on Eden Prime.

If he was, then he can basically fulfill the new 'Ashley' role, while Ashley gets to explore 'ooo sexy Spectre' role development.

Kaiden may also have exclusive content/coversations/etc in the game, he doesn't have to actually know Vega.

So if you cheat on Ashley it'll become a love quadrangle? Ooooh the plot thickens.

Well, according to Ashley, nothing really happened, so idk about that.  Could be that he was attracted to her, and never voiced his interests, for the same reasoning as Ash.

Ooh, so in the 3 years between ME1 and ME3 Ash re-hooked up with James while my Shepard hooked up with Miranda. That would be an awesome double date!

To the idea: I like it since it gives potential for Ashley to grow as a character while giving me a reason to care for the new guy and explain why he's on my ship.

Not impossible. Would be nice to have a character connected to Ashley, especially if she didn't survive Virmire... Maybe we'll get a certain turkish biotics user as another Squadmate to balance things out for Kaidan.
Think of the Love triangles!

I'm pretty sure the 'James' in the e-mail is a reference to a member of Bioware that was leaving at the time, so I'm not sure weather the E-mail James is even a game character, or just an easter egg letter.

Interesting lovewise as well. When male Shep cheated on Ashley in ME2 and is trying to get her back in ME3, you might actually have to compete for her with James. Not the narcisistic 'I am Shepard and everyone wants me'-love triangle we're expecting.

Hmm.  Didn't even think of something like that.  Yeah, having Nirali as a squaddie would be cool.

If it did turn out this way, bioware would be able to replace Ash/Kaidan with someone who had a similar skillset, with connections to you former squaddie.  Seems like it would work really well.

You are correct in that it was an easter egg, but remember what you said "at the time." Alot of things can happen in the five years between the 2007 Mass Effect 1 and the 2012 Mass Effect 2

Wasn't her name Rahna?

Anyway, I agree with you about this being a possible way to give Shep a balanced team regardless of who you left behind on Virmire.
So far I had considered the possibility that Vega might get different skillsets depending on who survived Virmire - i.e. that he'd only be a tank if Ashley died, but if she survived he'd be a sentinel, an engineer or an infiltrator to make sure you have all the bases covered even if Garrus etc. died in ME2 and all you have left is Liara, Ashley/Kaidan and Vega.
But I'd like to have some competition for regaining Ashley's love, or someone else to talk to about Kaidan besides Ashley.

^ Yeah, you're right. Nirali was Samesh's wife; I accidentally mixed their names up, lol.

God no, please no. I don't know whether you were in the Dragon Age 2 forums when they announced that your brother/sister will die depending on the class you chose, but the outrage was very powerful. Nobody wants to feel like they've had a choice removed from them for something they didn't even know would happen... especially if that choice was a squadmate.

What would happen if people hate Ashley but love Vega and Kaidan? They won't be able to get both. Either they should have this Nirali as a squadmate no matter what or not at all
