Perhaps both Vega and (hypothetically) Rahna get in. Then, not only do you get a squaddie who might be vying for the love of the VS, you get a squaddie who you can talk to about your deceased squaddie.

Besides, isn't it already confirmed that we're getting a new female squaddie?  Someone voiced by Emily Hopkins, labeled as Vigilante?

I'm pretty sure the 'James' in the e-mail is a reference to a member of Bioware that was leaving at the time, so I'm not sure weather the E-mail James is even a game character, or just an easter egg letter.

It wouldn't be the first time an easter egg turned into actual game content (a few of the Mortal Kombat characters started out as easter eggs or gliches)

Not impossible. Would be nice to have a character connected to Ashley, especially if she didn't survive Virmire... Maybe we'll get a certain turkish biotics user as another Squadmate to balance things out for Kaidan.
Think of the Love triangles!

Hmm.  Didn't even think of something like that.  Yeah, having Nirali as a squaddie would be cool.

If it did turn out this way, bioware would be able to replace Ash/Kaidan with someone who had a similar skillset, with connections to you former squaddie.  Seems like it would work really well.

God no, please no. I don't know whether you were in the Dragon Age 2 forums when they announced that your brother/sister will die depending on the class you chose, but the outrage was very powerful. Nobody wants to feel like they've had a choice removed from them for something they didn't even know would happen... especially if that choice was a squadmate.

What would happen if people hate Ashley but love Vega and Kaidan? They won't be able to get both. Either they should have this Nirali as a squadmate no matter what or not at all

No one said that you'd only get either Vega or Rahna. They could still give you both of them, just with different dialogue (i.e. either mooning over a lost love that never quite was or competing with Shep for the Ash/Kaidan's affection).

Didn't Ashley say she was the only survivor? I'm recalling dialogue along the lines of "my whole unit wiped out."

@Northern Sun:

The e-mail that Ashley sent was written before the events of Eden Prime. It talks about how James was taken out of her unit, and assaigned to combat pirates crossing from the Terminus into the Kepler Verge.

Would anyone like me to put the e-mail into the OP, so we could all have an easy reference?

Edit:  Hell, doing it anyways.

I don't think there's any confirmation beyond that it's on IMDB. And we don't know where they got that information.
But anyways, Emily Hopkins doesn't sound very turkish to me... :) (Although that doesn't have to mean anything - I'm looking at you, Zevran! Oh, and you too, Ashley, cause you haven't quite got the same ethnicity as your VO actress either)

She wasn't the only survivor, as Jacob Taylor was also on Eden Prime and was in the same division as Ashley  http://masseffect.wi...ontier_Division

No, you weren't. But Fathom seemed be implying the idea of completely replacing squadmembers based on who survived Virmire in order to get both balanced skills and an equal story.

^ Well, you'd still get that, even if you got both Vega and Rahna.

Hmm...

I like the idea that if you romanced Ash in ME1 - You've now got some competition. Its been mentioned before, but never with that connection of the letter.

Yeah, that could be very interesting.

Rahna better stay away from my Shep and his Kaidan! I'm dropping/killing her at first occasion if she's a squadmate

I know. That's why I said they should avoid the "if" situations and focus on "both", "none", or a character that provides completely different experiences depending on the actions. Like being either BFFs with the virmire survivor or in a possible relationship

You two are worse than Vyrnnus! <_<
I don't think that's really the best way to rebuild your relationship... But I'll let Kaidan handle the payback.

Aw, shucks.  Thanks!  ^_^

I was thinking that this could also tie into the repercussions bioware was talking about if you cheated on the VS during ME2.  I.e., when the game starts, Ash is already with Vega, and if you want to win her back, you have to go through some extensive character interaction.

Some cool ideas being passed around here, though, even if it sounds cool, not everyone has to be connected, this isn't Lost. That said, I did hear that the new characters would not be romance options and always thought It was because it was a little late in the story to meet true love, maybe James/Rahna will be love rivals instead.

That said, the theme of this game seems to be unity, united races, united friends, coming together against all odds, if you were going to hammer home the connections, we as humans all share, then this would be a pertinent time to do it, and spice up the romances, I mean, is Shepard the only flirt on the ship.

I'd love it. That would actually make the repercussions far more interesting than remaining loyal. I might have to cheat on my ME1 LI every time. :D

So now that we figured this out, what happens with Liara? Who is she with if you cheated? I'd love for it to be Wrex. That'd be some serious competition... :D

And I'd like those two to hook up anyway a couple of centuries down the line, when everyone else is long gone.

I can see that happening.  Or, if you want Ash back in ME3 and you cheated on her in ME2, getting her back becomes hard mode.  Also, there's a built in betrayal in there.  Shepard is after Ash and James steps aside, but acts like things are cool.  Then...  Right after Shepard save the galaxy, BLAMB.  Shot in the back.

I was more referring to the 212 itself, rather than every other marine on Eden Prime.

Nonetheless Ashley's James transferred before the attack on Eden Prime, so he didn't die there.

Well, we already have a resolution via LotSB.  In that, she  was quite hurt by the fact that Shep wasn't loyal, but by the end of it, she's pretty much ok with you continuing your relationship with 'LI of your choice'.  Granted, she wasn't exactly happy about it, but she was willing to let Shep go without holding anything against him.

This will be awesome if this is indeed the James of Ashley's past.
