If you go the ME3 site, you'll see there is a new trailer. At the start of the trailer during a news interview, we learn that thousands of Alliance ships were orbiting above europe before the Reapers arrived. So obviously it wasn't an out of the blue surprise attack like some people have been saying here. The fleet got crushed though. I doubt they managed to take out a single Reaper.

Maybe they were there for Shepard's trial?

Well, lying was probably the best way to avoid panic. Politicians lie to us all the time about bad things.

lolwut? Shepard's trial is taking place in the US anyway. It's pretty clear from the trailer that that fleet was preparing to defend Earth from the Reapers.

Does Admiral Hackett lead the ships that would presumably have been able to deploy to Earth's orbit?
Because he should know about the Reapers and all from Shepard via Arrival.

Sometimes not revealing the truth is better for the people than throwing everyone into a frenzy.

They could have evacuated some people before the Reapers arrived. Overall I agree though, the main point here is that the Alliance knew the Reapers were coming, it was not a surprise.

The alliance as well as the council?

Uhhr... why not just let the reapers win if everyone is so adamant about this (the fools).

Or just let earth fall to the reapers - im sure renegade shepard wouldn't mind.

What are they supposed to do? No one knows how to defeat the Reapers.

The 5th fleet is stationed at Arcturus station. Therefore it should have been destroyed before the Reapers got to Earth. Unless they abandoned Arcturus.

To where would they have evacuated them?  The entire Milky Way is pretty much ****ed.

One of the translations of the news report claims the bulk of the fleet retreats out of the system prior to the attack or before hand (can't confirm this as I don't speak the languages - but I've seen it crop up a few times)

"Look people, there is a imminent attack by superpowerful sentient starship that will kill us all, but don't panic."
.
Well... I think it works better not telling the truth.
.
And there is some subtle things that indicates that races of the galaxy didn't totally ignored the reapers, lilke the end thing in Kasumi's loyalty mission, or the fact that the alliance stop protesting against the Turians building more dreadnoughts...

This is of course assuming that trailer has any bearing on events in the game and isn't just dramatic fluff to hype the game.

Harbinger confirmed for bro to end all bros. He came all the way from darkspace just to testify on Shepards behalf.

Does the US even exist by that time?

US in Mass Effect Lore was split into northern US and southern Us, well then again, they are no longer "The united states", so they are probably referred to only as America.

This peice of lore is found during the Kasumi Dlc. Image IPB Can't believe I still remember.

Lol I love how since Bioware is under EA, they now do the TV act thing, it's not bad, it's actually pretty cool, but very typical EA Image IPB

No, I believe that in the game they said that the U.S, Mexico, and Canada became one big country.

Can't tell if that's sarcasm, so no comment, lol.

Here's the codex of it, ctrl + f "second american civil war" and you will also find right above it the president of the "united north american states".

Best post thus far. Makes perfect sense to me. :)
