  I posted this thread in the ME 2 forums a while back,  seeing all those Reaper theory threads lately, I am reposting it here

What we know:

Technology
- The Reapers have built the Citadel and the Mass Relays.
- The Reapers use far more advanced technology then what they've left for organics
- The Reapers have devices that can turn organics to mindless cyborgs ( Dragon's teeth ) in hours
- The Reapers are the only ships larger than frigate that are able to land on a planet
- There is a more advanced version of  a Mass Relay ( Omega 4 Relay )
- The Reapers can build bases in the Galactic core
- It is possible to destroy a Mass relay with an impact of a large enough mass with a large enough force
- The energy of a mass relay is enough to produce an explosion of supernova proportions

Armaments
- The Reapers have powerfull weapons that can cut through Alliance Crusiers like butter
- The Reapers have extremely powerfull shields that can withstand constant bombardment from the Alliance fleet
- The Reepers have reletively weak armor that is easy to destroy

Special ablities
- The Reapers can indoctrinate organic minds at varying speeds, althuogh the more control they have, the less capable the subject becomes
- The Reapers can Assume Direct Control, of organics with special cybernetic implants, althuogh the death of the controled subject can disable the Reaper controling it for an unknown amount of time

The Cycle of Extinction
- Every ~50,000 years the Reapers come from Dark Space to the known galaxy through the Citadel Relay
- The Reapers extinguish all spacefaring civilization and harvest all resourses discovered by the current civilization, using indoctrinated slaves.
- The Reapers use the Citadel to shut down all the Mass Relays so they can divide the civilization and attack one Cluster at a time
- The extinction process takes several centuries
- The Reapers have been doing this Cycle for at least 37 million years
-  After each cycle the Reapers leave one of their own behind to monitor the advancment of organic civilizations and eventually signal the Keepers to open the Citadel relay

Other facts
- The Reapers' shields can be breached with conventonal Mass Accelerator weapons if they are large enough
- According to Sovereign there is a realm of exictanse so far beyond our own that we can't even imagine
- The Protheans are the only race known to have managed to construct a Mass Relay

Construction
- The Reapers are constructed by combinig the genetic material of several million membes of the same race, althuogh not every race is suitable for this
- When new Reapers are constrcuted they look like there race from which they are made of and it is unknown how they become squidlike dreadnoughts
- According to Harbinger: Humans, Drell and Krogan are suitable races to make Reapers from

The Collectors
- The Reapers tried to make a Prothean Reaper and failed and so they turned them into a race of mindless slaves
- The Collectors'  task was to acquire samples of species with rare genetic mutations
- The Collectors' technology is superior to that of organic civilizations but is inferior to that of the Reapers 

Popular theories
1. Geth on steroids- The have been constructed by an ancient civilization as a cheap labor force but ended up turning on them
2. Paranoia- The Reapers do the Cycle of extinction because they are afraid that if an organic race will find them, it will want to destroy them
3. Reproduction- The Reapers do the cycle of extinction in order to find worthy organic races to create more Reapers

Note
- Sovereign and later the Reapers in Retribution claimed that there a "realm of exitance so far beyond our own, we can't even imagine it"

I think the whole 'realm of existence' thing was just a way for Sov to talk himself up. Or a way for the BW writers to make them seem more impressive than they really are without having to explain their entire back story in 5 minutes.

It was confirmed in Retribution

I think that all Reapers actually have a unique form. All of the Sovereign look-alikes were just place holders.

It didn't look like that in the E3 demo and I don't thing the dev team can design so many forms
