Seems like a "all Muslims are terrorists" type of comparison. I don't hate Batarians, but so far we haven't really met any that was on our side. Garrus mentions a Batarian who was on his squad...but that's about it.

Sgt. Cathka was on our side.
Or thought he was, anyways.

This whole hating Batarians thing is a bit stereotypical don't ya think? Sure Balak and his gang left a bad taste in most people's mouths but he was a radical, who believed Humans muscled into their territory, trusting the Council to do something but don't, because we're "special". Naturally they were resentful at the loss of support, wouldn't you? Balak was a psycho who, to me, lost his mind by trying to kill a planet for compensation. And that was obviously psychotic since every other Batarian thought it was ridiculous as well. Truth is, we know almost nothing about Batarian history or culture, and the only representatives for them are bounty hunters, thugs, slavers, or terrorists, which is a small but growing sect, mostly out of desperation, but that doesn't mean the galaxy is better off without them though. I say give them a chance, my opinion though.

I want sources that say most Batarians don't support the enslavement of humans, that most batarians don't support their oppressive government and that most Batarians are not speciest. Until then I just see a lot of ass pulling. And if I had to judge the Batarians just on my experiences in the game, I'd have to say I pity their barbarism.

Don't hate them, just think they make great torpedoes.
Ok Garrus, get the next batarian ready for launch!

Other than a few skirmishes there species hasn't done much. You would think more of that would be directed at Turians or Geth.

Well, stuff like calling slavery "an inextricable part of the batarian caste system" and that trying to remove it "violates their cultural rights" might have something to do with it. And all the terrorist funding and generally underhanded and unethical practices the Hegemony seems to use to push their agenda.
That doesn't justify hating an entire race just because their government is full of bad eggs.
But it certainly justifies hating a culture, assuming the government statements are representative of that culture. So far, Mass Effect hasn't given me much reason to believe that Batarian culture in general isn't rather supportive of the horrific slave raids made against human colonies. If Bioware gives us some indication that most Batarians are really sweet, loving people clamoring for socialized health care and more homosexuality in video games, perhaps that view of the cutlure can safely be relaxed.
For now, it appears that the culture itself perpetuates the idea that one's political enemies may justifiably be abducted, tortured, and used as slaves in whatever capacity the Batarians see fit. An individual Batarian may be treated with cautious acceptance under some circumstances, but the guns go hot when they show up in force.
