I somehow have a feeling that the main story in ME3 might end up being quite a bit shorter
Will ME3's story be longer than ME2?

They said it will be the same length.
As for the main story, I suspect it will be about the same. In ME2 you had a half-dozen main story quests and then the character quests, only loosely associated with the main story, and the total side quests. In ME3, those character quests will likely be replaced with "recruit the races" quests, which will be more central to the main story, so hopefully the whole thing will be more focused.
That's assuming, Bioware keeps their traditional game structure.

@ OP: Really? I think it will be longer. This time around, the recruiting and "loyalty" missions (for lack of a better term, with civilizations and all) WILL be the main story, whereas in ME2, the loyalty quests were optional but without doing them the game felt very short. I think it will feel a bit more like ME1, with several long, complicated main missions before we get to the end. I actually think it might be the longest of all three.

I hope it's three discs.

It is more likely to be a tad longer considering you have figure out how to beat the reapers along with the recruiting species missions.

The main quest in ME2 alone can be completed in 7/8 hours. 6 of those hours were spent on recruiting which effectively meant 2 hours worth of 'actual' story missions. If M3's main story is that short, then it'll be really disappointing.

That's been on my mind as well. I sincerely hope that ME 3 doesn't follow in the Splinter Cell Conviction, Bioshock 2, and the host of other games that were great but short fashion. That's why I'm a strong advocate to releasing the game on 3 discs as I've been pretty vocal about in other posts that I've made. Sure I want the series to go out with a bang but I do want to feel the stress of exploration while I enjoy the ride of getting to the end. That's where the RPG aspect of the game should really come into play. I mean, with ME 1 and ME 2, ME 3 should most definately try to trump them both not just in story and action but in content and immersion. I would hope that the game would be at least 20 hours or more just for the main story.
I'm glad it's delayed but I really want to feel absolution with the final installment to Shep's story.

BioWare's devs said ME3 will be about the same length as ME2. I don't think they will disappoint in that respect.

They said that you will have more choice in the ending if you complete the "recruit the races" quests so I suspect most of them are optional, such as with the character quests in ME2. That means if you simply want to tear through quickly to the end, it will probably be an option.
