For example: The Battle of Ostagar was more epic than anything in Dragon Age 2.

I cry in my pillow every night. Origins came out 2 1/2 years ago and I still don't have an epic to take its place. Image IPB

You forgot the part after you talked to the companions at the beginning of the battle of Denerim in Origins. Now THAT was EPIC!

"KILL THOSE GODLESS BASTARDS!"

Yes, Dragon Age 2 is just...blurgh.

Doesn't DAII ask you to kill any godless bastards?

That was an extremely moving part of the game. It really was epic.

They obviously tried to recreate that scene in DA2... but it just wasn't the same. Why? Was the game too short? The campanions not as well-writted or likeable? I don't even know. Maybe it just felt watered down after the original Origins scene.

Very much so. It seems that all that Epicness from Origins transformed to cheese in DA2.

I do. There's ways of being epic without a Big Bad. DA2 did not truly find it.

Also, for Bioware to say there isn't a Big Bad, but then to give the final fight so much over the top ridiculousness puts to lie the idea. They tried to take a high road, but fell off into the muddy trenches.

I don't. Epic usually gets silly and as well done as DAO was I liked the not-epic struggle vs Loghain a LOT more than the epicstruggle vs the mute arch-demon. I'd hope that stories could move on from the "save the world" format to something that is a bit more grounded and complex.

Yes, I miss the love and care and detail put into the game more.

Ending DA:O after the fight with Loghain would have been totally anti-climactic. Even if the fight turned into him having the ability to fly through the air, shoot laser bolts, and animate statues all over Denerim.

Oh wait, that's what they did with DA2.

Combining real world intrigue and motive, like what we saw with the Landsmeet and overthrowing Loghain, with something huge and out-of-this-world, like the Darkspawn Horde and the Archdemon, is a great balance for a video game. DA:O did this remarkably well.

DA2 tried to strip down these elements to make it more "grounded and complex" and wound up, against all odds, making the plot cheesy and hoaky.

Hmm you miss saving the world.. well DA2 is not about saving the world. In fact if you decide to go one root, you get a not too clear end, oh wait!! that already happens in DAO aswell and thats why people want it back, right? meh
I like both games, origens have alot of things that I like, and DA2 bring up few things that I really really like, so if they make DA3 with the good's from each of this games, It will make an EPIC game.

To you, while Ostagar was a very epic scene, I still find the Qunari battle starting from when the Arishok begins the attack all the way to his death to be more epic then anything in DAO but the Landsmeet.

Oh yes I do! I loved how Origins felt. I never felt anything like that during DA2.. when in Origins I was preparing to storm the gates of Denerim and Alistair gave his speech.. that just sent shivers down my spine.

Yes. I like Dragon Age 2, but I think the story was on a much smaller scale and I don't think it worked as well as Origins' did.

Abosolutely, it is good to have a sense of purpose instead of being a stumble bum.

Origins was great felt like your decisions with each faction meant something and showed at the end of your story. DA2 was way to linear and to much go to this point kill the large group and come back there was no real choices involved. The choices you made with each quest didn't really mean anything with the end story, you still got the same ending.

I don't entirely agree with the comparison, but do agree the end of Act 2 was more epic than the end of the game.  It just seemed silly and winning the battles was anti-climatic.

Perhaps it would have been a better story if:

- Hawke deposes Meredith due to encouragement from nobles, the guard, some templars, mages, and other citizens of Kirkwall.  Even the drunks at the Hanged Man seemed to realize that she was losing it.
- Is named Champion by the Viscount for having removed Meredith.
- Given the templar command void/anarchy, the Circle rebels and frees themselves, thus kicking over the sandcastle.  Acts of terrorism by companions not necessary.
- The Arishok does that thing he does, and that becomes the final battle.

It might need a different kind of device to show a turning point in Isabela's development if you take the relic sub-plot out of play.  Other than that, the story would have played very differently, with no need to make damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't end game choices.

I dunno...

I miss the epic feeling that Baldur's Gate II had.
DA:O was good, but it didn't really felt as epic - I blame the egregious level scaling and overall "too much mechanisms, not enough immersion".

I miss the epic feeling that Baldur's Gate had. Trying to take down Drizzt with my army of conjured horrors was the very definition of epic.

Yes, I miss the epic feeling of DAO. DA2 had no real "holy crap, sh*t is about to go down!" moments.
